Party With Ruby T In Her New Video ‘Late Nights’

Sri-Lankan-born rapper Ruby T gets a party started and keeps it going late into the night in her new video “Late Nights.” The scenes in the video are derived from events from her childhood in London, from summer BBQ block parties to late night house parties with a DJ spinning.

The video also showcases Ruby T’s Sri-Lankan heritage through traditional costumes, Sri Lankan dancers, and lyrical references. She raps, “call me Sri Lankan Queen.”

Ruby T comes from a family of refugees who fled civil war and were forced to relocate to the United Kingdom when Ruby T was 7 years old. Her heritage and these turbulent events have had an impact on both her life and her music.

While she grew up in ethnically diverse South London, she stood out at open mic and rap battle events, as Asian women rarely took the mic in these settings. She attracted DJs’ attention and was asked to perform with them at house parties and events. After graduating University, she moved to LA to experience life in the USA and then went on to meet with producers and other music industry figures. She was influenced by new hip-hop sounds in the United States, and with this influence and British musical style, she began to record and produce the songs that had previously lived only on paper in her bedroom drawer.

Ruby T now wants to share her unique blend of sounds with the world. She loves to perform live. She was recently selected by the London Mayor to perform as the main feature for an anti-knife crime campaign, as knife crime has become an epidemic amongst young Londoners. Ruby T completed a successful tour of Asia at the end of last year performing also to her native Sri Lankans who went crazy for her music! She was also the main feature for an interview and live performance on the Music TV Channel in Sri Lanka further building her fast-growing fan base. Ruby T is very aware of her roots and the suffering of her people and visits Sri Lanka regularly in order to support a charity for orphaned children who lost their parents in the civil war.

Ruby T designs all her own stage clothes and her brand and look are certainly unique and striking. With a childhood of making her own clothes with her auntie at the sewing machine: Ruby T is definitely a no frills and in her own words a “keepin’ it real” type of person.
