Where else but Memphis might one stand next to the founder of one of the largest public companies in America, who is himself standing next to a teenage girl who is wearing a flower shirt, ripped jean shorts and cowboy boots, who herself is standing next to a middle-aged man, head bopping to lyrics from George Clinton.

Where else other than Memphis might a legendary, Grammy-winning songwriter such as David Porter or a famed, Grammy-winning producer such as Boo Mitchell walk freely, able to enjoy listening to live music without being mobbed by scores of well-wishers?

It all happened this past weekend at Mempho Fest, held Saturday, Oct. 6, and Sunday, Oct. 7, on the grounds of Shelby Farms Park.

In the second year of the festival, this year’s Mempho expanded the package, with more and bigger name acts performing in more venues and way more attendees.

The two largest stages were sponsored by First Tennessee Bank and Hard Rock; a 50-foot geodesic structure — built by Incendia and taken on the festival circuit, housing a DJ-led dance party underneath pillars of fire — was sponsored by Orion Federal Credit Union and the Orion Dome.

Mempho Fest 2018 was headlined by Post Malone, Beck, Nas, Phoenix and Janelle Monáe. It also heavily featured Memphis-based or locally connected musicians, including Juicy J & Project Pat, a Royal Studios Tribute led by Boo Mitchell, the Bar-Kays, Lucero, Big Ass Truck, Frayser Boy, Eric Gales, Cory Branan and Don Bryant & the Bo-Keys.

Founded by former Memphian and MUS grad Diego Winegardner — the son of the late Roy Winegardner, who was president and chairman of Holiday Inns Inc. following founder Kemmons Wilson — the second-annual Mempho Fest took advantage of its park environment, adding attendee options such as primitive camping, RV camping and glamping. Festival organizers have a long-term plan for the event that will see it adding more days to the weekend with even more acts and activities.

If this festival keeps rising as planned, Mempho Fest would be on par with the largest festivals in the world, such as California’s Coachella or England’s Glastonbury.
