Sam Era Enters the Scene with “Nothing Was The Same”

Meet Sam Era – Phoenix’s newest R&B singer-songwriter. Stylizing her relationship woes into a sultry trance, her debut single “Nothing Was The Same” captures a darker side to today’s modern R&B sound. The song is a promising start for the upcoming artist, as she caught the ears of Spotify’s Release Radar and it has taken off since. We got a chance to chat with Sam about “Nothing Was The Same” and what’s to come in the future!

Tell us more about the inspiration behind “Nothing Was The Same.”

“Nothing Was The Same” is almost like a coming of age song for me.  It was the realization I came to throughout the writing process, that if you’re in a relationship with someone, but they never acknowledge you, or your relationship, that something is missing there.  It sounds crazy, but when I was 21 years old and crazy in love, I just thought it meant that no one understood what I had with that particular person.  But I’ve learned now that not a lot of good comes from secret relationships.

You’ve been working on music for your album for a while now. What made you lead off with “Nothing Is The Same?”

Yeah, I have!  I’ve been working on it for 3 years!  The funny thing is “Nothing Was The Same” was actually one of the latter songs I wrote for the album, so technically its one of the “newer” songs even though I wrote it in December of 2016.  There was a demo I had of it that was lying around for a while, no one I had worked with in the past had shown much interest in it, so I honestly thought the song would die there.  But then when I met my current producer, it was actually the first song I sent to him and he loved it.  It was our first collaboration together, and I still remember the first time I heard it there was just something about it, his production really made it come alive.  I listened to it in the car whilst aimlessly driving around at least 30 times the first day I got it.  And to this day I think it is still mutually our favorite song we have done together.

How does it feel to finally release your debut single?

Crazy!  It feels like there was so much build up to this moment, we were working towards it for so long and it’s finally here! But it feels really good, I’m so glad that people are finally going to get to hear my music.  I wish I could say I feel a sense of relief, but we have so many upcoming releases planned this is just the start of it all.  It’s a lot to look forward to and I’m very excited to continue to release new music.

How did you meet your now producer Devon Hancock?

It’s a funny story actually!  He was interning at the studio I was working out of back in 2016, and he used to come and observe my sessions, but we never really spoke that much.  I knew he produced his own material but I had never really heard any of it before.  Flash forward maybe 6 months later, I was scrolling through Instagram and heard one of his songs and was super impressed!  I was looking for a producer at the time so I dm’d him immediately, and we’ve been working together ever since!

What are you most excited for in the future? Will you be playing any shows soon?

I am most excited to drop my album in January!  It’s been such a long time coming I’m so excited for people to hear it in full, and really get to know the story the album tells and my vision as an artist.  I’m excited to hear peoples reactions.  I think people will find a lot to relate to.  The whole album is a retelling of my romantic failures, and I know we’ve all been in those situations, and by telling my story I just want people to know that they are not alone.  No solidified shows on the horizon just yet, but definitely keep an eye out for any updates on my social media!
