Nonames Releases “E Numbers EP” via Tru Thoughts

Out NOW via Tru Thoughts, E Numbers EP is the latest offering from Foreign Beggars’ James Miller AKA Nonames. Taking its name from a stand out line courtesy of original Meridian Crew member President T, E Numbers EP also features Roachee, Killa P, Nolay, Dizmack, Jammz, Marger, and Grim Sickers on a release that serves to represent some of the foremost grime artists of this generation and has received upfront support from Dev (BBC Radio 1/1Xtra) and DJ Target (BBC Radio 1). The single package includes sonically explorative remixes from Chimpo and Sumgii, alongside clean versions, instrumentals and a cappellas of the tracks. Following his time as part of five-piece Focused Few in 2000, James Miller AKA Nonames came together alongside Dag, Pav and Ebow to form Foreign Beggars in 2002. Sixteen years and six studio albums later (the most recent, ‘2 2 KARMA’ Deluxe edition ft. Rag’n’Bone Man , released October 2018), he continues to tour with Foreign Beggars the world over. As a DJ, Nonames spans the full UK spectrum, hip-hop, grime, half-time, through to 160-170bpm, with his production credits appearing on releases from Gorillaz, UNKLE, Roots Manuva and Corinne Bailey Rae.

Expanding beyond his usual sphere, Nonames has stripped things back on E Numbers EP, narrowing down a selection of beats and tempos to a handful of loops linked with a consistent, powerful energy. On what is his first upfront grime release, Nonames’ meticulous attention to detail creates a raw platform, leaving his carefully chosen MCs to bring the tracks to life as the driving force of the EP.

“No one sounds the same on the EP which is a testament to the diversity out there.” Nonames adds, “When you hear something in the music that makes you know who’s needed, you get that good take, and it brings out something in the track you didn’t hear before… That’s one of the most exciting part of the process.”

“Dads and Mums feat. Roachee and Killa P” sees the formidable former Ruff Sqwad and Roll Deep members question what is going on beyond what is seen in the media, how the media uses the youth to tell a story that’s far from the everyday truth and the a society-wide picture that encompasses all members of the community; “the lyrics stem from feeling constantly bullied and targeted by the police. It’s just havoc in the neighbourhood,” Roachee explains.

Title track “E Numbers” features the distinctive sounds of Nolay, Dizmack and President T bringing to the mix their own determination and flow. While President T’s unmissable originality does not disappoint and provides the standout line from which the track takes its name, South London MC Nolay provides a blunt and straight execution of attitude and words and Dizmack puts forward elements from across his life, “I wanted to do me and reflect who I am.”

Taking the EP to new realms with an infectious hook, “Til I’m Rich feat. Jammz, Marger and Grim Sickers” draws elements from the old guard and new wave of grime artists, all with their own unique delivery and storytelling abilities.“These lyrics are about me returning to the game”, Marger states “reminding everyone who the boss is”. For Jammzhowever, the verses represent his beginnings; “I wrote these lyrics in a very early stage of my career, which makes this song even more special as I’ve almost followed through with what was written during those early phases”, he explains.Along with the EP, Nonames shares the video for “Til I’m Rich (feat. Jammz, Marger and Grim Sickers)”.

Bringing extra spice to the release are reworkings “Dads and Mums feat. Roachee and Killa P (Chimpo Duppy)”and “Dads and Mums feat. Roachee and Killa P (Sumgii Remix)”. Chimpo expands on original track, upping the ante to deliver a 140bmp banger. Prolific west London producer Sumgii’s eerie remix gives “Dads and Mums” a horror movie makeover, with trademark spooky synths.

Continuing on the road with Foreign Beggars, Nonames is planning a host of releases, collaborating with a myriad of featured artists and spanning genres across the musical spectrum.
