Stephen Curry is an Oakland staple, but his roots are on the other coast. Raised in the Charlotte, N.C. area as the eldest child of Dell Curry, even attending school at nearby Davidson College, Stephen credits the community and the people of Charlotte for helping mold him into the man he is today. To celebrate his homecoming for NBA All-Star 2019, he wanted to make sure to give back and show some home court love.

Today, the Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation, along with Under Armour and Chase – which has been serving the Charlotte community for over 14 years – raised the curtain on a large-scale renovation of the Carole Hoefener Center to serve the community of Charlotte for years to come. With guidance from the Charlotte Housing Authority and program support from the NBA Players’ Association, state-of-the-art upgrades were on display during a celebratory unveil today, including a brand new education space courtesy of Chase and a refurbished basketball gym from Under Armour. In attendance was Stephen, Ayesha, Dell, Sonya, Seth, and Damion Lee and Sydel Curry-Lee, to celebrate the new center and acknowledge the opportunity it offers as an equalizer for every member of the Charlotte community, now and in the future.

We chose the Carole Hoefener Center because their priorities are similar to my family’s priorities: equal opportunities for education, access to and more knowledge about nutrition and wellness and having a safe and inspiring place to play. I am excited to see my hometown community engage in the new space, and we deeply believe in its ongoing impact. – Stephen Curry

The large scale renovation was driven by the pillars of the Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation that includes a holistic focus on nutrition, fitness, and education. Areas impacted include the foyer, bathrooms, locker rooms, conference space, dance/yoga room, and ceiling and flooring throughout the Center.

“We are proud to partner with the Curry family and Under Armour to help refurbish this center, which has been an anchor in our community for decades,” said Clarence Nunn, head of Chase Middle Market Banking in the Southeast.“This state-of-the-art education space will give students an opportunity to learn and grow in a hands-on, collaborative environment.”

The basketball gym was revitalized with new scoreboards, flooring, and murals from local artists. The infrastructure of the computer lab was completely rebuilt, and new energy-efficient appliances were brought into the kitchen area. Rather than discard the materials being replaced, they were recycled and donated to nearby community organizations, including a community center in Greensboro, N.C. that was able to completely reinstall their gym floor with materials from the Carole Hoefener Center. The renovation culminated in a memorable unveil, with North Carolina Governor Cooper and Charlotte Mayor Lyles in attendance. The day was busy, as STEM and culinary students showed off their skills to the Curry family during early programming.

“Under Armour’s brand ethos is ‘WE WILL;’ a call that says together, as a community we can do incredible things. The community of Charlotte and the Curry family are all part of the Under Armour family, and we’re thrilled to do our part to give back to the Carole Hoefener Center and provide a modern, thoughtful, safe space for every person in the community to enjoy, learn and grow,” said Stacey Ullrich, Senior Director, Philanthropy at Under Armour.

A showcase game featuring local area Under Armour Association (UAA) basketball athletes was well attended by youth from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district and the entire Curry family, before Stephen, Seth and Dell all participated in a Shooting Stars competition co-sponsored by Eastbay x Champs Sports. A slam dunk showcase by the Flight Brothers wowed the crowd, and the event wrapped with a special performance by Lil Yachty. In all, the event was represented all that both the Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation and Under Armour stand for – community.

Every child that comes through these doors will now have the opportunity to envision and explore their greatest potential in life. We applaud Stephen and the Curry Family for embracing the Carole Hoefener Center and investing in our community through a relationship that will fuel the dreams of children for years to come.
