Tyler Perry Discusses His First Time Presenting at the Oscars

Celebrated and award-winning actor, filmmaker Tyler Perry spoke with SiriusXM’s John Fugelsang where he revealed he almost didn’t get the chance to present at the Oscars in 2010.

[The bodyguard backstage asked], “Why are you back here?”

John Fugelsang:  I had a memory of the first time you ever presented at the Oscars back in 2010. Do you, sir, remember the first thing you ever said when you walked out on stage to present your first Oscar?

Tyler Perry:  They just said my name at the Oscars I better enjoy cause I’ll never hear it again. I’ll never hear it here again. Yeah. Yeah. That was, that moment was really crazy because I was backstage and getting ready to go out and I’m standing there and I’m nervous and my first time ever doing it. The security guard comes running, “Who you? Get out of here! Get out of here! Why are you back here?”  So they moved… I’m like, “No, no, no, I’m going on.”  And the stage manager runs over, he says, “No he’s going on!”   They pushed me out like as I’m hearing, “Ladies and gentlemen, Tyler Perry.”  So I walk out going down those stairs, at that moment and that, yeah, it was crazy.

John Fugelsang: As this guy is telling you to get out.

Tyler Perry:  As the security guys telling me to get out. So I come off stage, he goes, “I’m sorry man. How do I know? I’m just a security guy.”

John Fugelsang: It’s telling though that you make such a humble comment your first time on the Oscar stage. Did you really believe it? That that might be the only time you’d hear your name on that award show?

Tyler Perry:  Yeah, because honestly, I, as wonderful as it is, it’s not something that I’ve ever really aspired to. So to see all of these people getting these breaks and so much diversity and everything’s changed, it’s really, really wonderful.  Because then in 2010, it was a very different time for people of color and especially in Hollywood. So I’m looking now at this, this rush of diversity, and things that I’ve been working on for many, many years to see that it’s now cool, is pretty powerful.

Well, he DID get his name mentioned again at the Oscars and this is what he had to say on his bold moment during the 91st Academy Awards:

Tyler Perry credits the women of his youth for making him a good man:
