Celebrated Actress and Singer Tasha Scott Discusses Returning Center Stage with New Project “Moon Child”

Tasha Scott

Bio – Tasha Scott was born and raised in Louisville, KY. She moved to Hollywood, CA, at the age of ten. She has performed on Star Search along with guest spots on TV Shows: Amen, 227, and Throb (starring the late great Paul Walker). In 1989, she landed a role in the film “Troop Beverly Hills” starring Shelly Long. That was followed up with a TV movie entitled “Kiss Shot,” in which Tasha’s character played the daughter of Oscar-winning actress & comedian Whoopi Goldberg. More television roles would follow; including appearances on “Full House,” “Quantum Leap” and “Under One Roof,” a sitcom starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Bell Calloway. However, it would be her role in the 1994 Fox TV sitcom “South Central” that would make her a household name. Tasha played the sassy little sister of Andre, played by actor Larenz Tate. The sitcom also included early acting roles by Maia Campbell, Shar Jackson, the late Lamont Bentley, and a young and fresh Jennifer Lopez. The series was canceled after one season. That same year, Tasha shot a memorable commercial for the Coca-Cola brand. In 1996 Tasha had a recurring role on the WB’s “The Parent’ Hood” starring Robert Townsend and Reagan Gomez-Preston. Later that year and the following year Tasha played her biggest role yet, touring the US in the classic “The Wiz” as Dorothy. The stage play also included Grace Jones, Peabo Bryson, CeCe Peniston, and Tony Terry. Tasha received rave reviews by reviewers and critics. While Tasha had conquered TV, Film and now stage; music still was her main goal. She signed a deal with Michael Jackson’s now-defunct label MJJ, an imprint of Sony Music. The only release from the label that included Tasha was the Men of Vizion single “Joyride” released in May of 1996. Although an album was never released, over the years Tasha released various songs online to keep her fans happy.

The Hype Magazine got Tasha to weigh in on her new project and her return to center stage as a music artist with her new EP “Moon Child”

From the small screen to the big screen you are a face we’ll always remember tell us about the musical side of Tasha Scott!

I started out singing at the sweet tender age of five in church. I became an R&B professional singer at the age of eight in Louisville, KY. My beautiful mother, may she rest in peace, went on to enter me into a lot of the local talent shows. I won most of them and went on to appear on a lot of the local television stations performing in a lot of the night clubs in Louisville, KY. I had reached a milestone by the age of ten. I knew that there was much more of the world that I needed to see, so I told my mother that I had gotten as big as I was going to get in Louisville and that it was time to move to a bigger city to further my career. It was either New York or Los Angeles and we chose Los Angeles, that’s where I begin to start my music/acting career. I have made somewhat of a great name for myself here in Los Angeles, CA, by performing in local clubs & appearing on local television stations.  I worked my way through the industry recording in house studios, major studios, working with a lot of non-famous and famous people. Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Temptations, Peabo Bryson, Howard Hewitt, Grace Jones, Tony Terry, CeCe Peniston, and Jeffrey Osborne, are some of the artists I worked with. I’ve met a lot of famous people in my life and made a lot of great connections. A few years down the road, I signed a record deal with Michael Jackson’s recording label MJJ/Sony. I completed a full album, but unfortunately, it never got released. Since then, I just kept recording making my way through the industry. Let me say this singing and music is my first love and I will keep reaching for the top. I don’t feel in my heart that I’m done yet.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

Basically watching television as a little girl saying to myself, I wanted to be famous just like the famous people I saw on television. I knew that in my heart I had a beautiful voice. I use to love listening to my mother’s jukebox. I would listen to a lot of the old songs and sing along to them, & my mother knew I could sing because I would hit those high notes when I played with my brothers around the house. The music would just touch my soul. I felt in my spirit that I could sing just like the people that I was listening to, and if I practice and work hard at it then I could be famous one day just like them. People all over the world would be listening to and enjoying my beautiful voice. I would also mimic the choir members in church. My mother would watch me and tell me I was going to be a famous star one day.

What do you get from music?

It makes me feel free, but also in control of my life. It gives me peace and understanding, & it helps me to love myself and others. It makes me feel crazy, sexy, and cool, at times. It gives me power, but it can also make me feel sad and happy at times too. Overall, music is my balance.

Tell us about your current project and what’s on the slate for the remainder of 2019!

I just released an EP called “Moon Child”. My first single is called “Here We Go” & I’m very happy and proud of this project. I was able to put my writing skills to the test and do a little producing as well. I’m working with a lot of great writers and producers on new music. I have a few offers for movies for this fall. I’ve been doing a lot of radio and magazine interviews so I’m just working my way back through the industry just making my mark. I’m hoping I can get some performances this year and features. I’m open to working with the best of the best and some amazing new artists

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you as an artist?

“Here We Go”

Tell us a bit about your work and passions OUTSIDE of music and acting…

I have a T-shirt line that I’ve been working on called, “There’s A Star In Every Heart”. I like to uplift, encourage and motivate people. I try to help them find and understand their purpose in life, understanding that you have to love yourself first before you can take on what life throws at you, I feel that’s where you’ll be most happiest more balanced and well rounded in life by loving yourself first. Also, whatever it is they’re passionate about, go for it and don’t look back. When you can find the star within your own heart, you can find it within others. I’m very passionate about helping the youth understand that life is not as hard as it seems. Growing up in the projects having nothing, I set goals young and told myself where I wanted to be and I work towards that. It’s a mind thing and daily praying and meditating. With a little bit of hard work and dedication, you can get there. Also make sure you have great people around you that motivate, encourage and pray over your life and give you a little push with each new day.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” aka WTF?! moment…

When I see these women using clear tape to transform their faces to look like somebody totally different, then take the clear tape off, it amazes me that they look ten times different from what they’re posting. CRAZY YO!!!
