JUNO Award Nominee Nuela Charles on the Concept and Making of New Cinematic Video “Long Way Down”

Nuela Charles is an alternative/soul singer-songwriter known for her soulful vocals and captivating stage presence. In 2018 she was nominated for a JUNO Award for her self-released sophomore album “The Grand Hustle.” She closed out the year with the release of her new EP “Distant Danger” – Nuela is solidifying herself as a Canadian music staple.

Watch the new video for “Long Way Down” which showcases noir-inspired, cinematics. It’s also accompanied with a discussion with Nuela Charles below!

What makes Long Way Down different from your past work?

Long Way Down was a shift for me in terms of my writing. It felt powerful just being able to say what I really wanted, and once it clicked, the words just flowed out. Sonically, the driving chain gang feel really fuelled the message and it felt like we were bringing back some of that soul.

Can you describe the concept behind the making of the video?

With the video, we wanted to create a story that saw the ups and downs of 3 different characters as they navigated the trials and temptations that happen throughout a night. I really wanted it to be cinematic and have the imagery add to the storyline.

How would you describe your artistic evolution throughout your career?

I feel like I’ve been lucky because I’ve been able to just do what I want. Artistically it’s been a lot of trial and error – and as I’ve gotten older – I’ve been able to explore new things and present that in my music, artwork and visuals.

What’s been the biggest change in your life over the past year?

The biggest change would be that I’m now, more than ever, able to live off of my music and that even though the music industry has gone full-on digital, the live sector is thriving and I’m fortunate to be able to play shows all over the country.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written?

That’s a tough question – but right now, it would be “Play God” by Sam Fender.  Just such a great song.
