Ahead of her official musical debut, The Hype Magazine got GiGi to weigh in on a few things!
From the outside looking in, who is the artist GiGi Cesare?
I’m a trap artist, inspired by musicians like Lil Miquela, Post Malone, Kehlani, Halsey and Youngblud. My songs are based on true stories, yet told through a fantasy scenario. I’ve known for a while the type of music I wanted to make, but it took a few years until I found someone who understood my vision and didn’t try to alter it. I’m also an actress and fiction writer! ☺
Tell us what brought you to music and how you developed your signature sound at such a young age?
Music has been a part of my soul since my earliest memories. From The Gypsy Kings to Biggie Smalls to Broadway musicals, I’ve been exposed to and loved so many different styles. My biological father was from Uruguay, and his favorite artist was Latin vocalist Eros Ramazzotti. Interestingly, he also loved John Mellencamp and Achy Breaky Heart (haha). My mom loves jazz standards – Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, and Patsy Cline. So, to say I have a wide array of influences is an understatement!
I have been acting for almost a decade, and a few years ago I had a desire to record some music. I began with a producer who had me doing a style of music I didn’t connect with at all, which I was unhappy about, but I couldn’t explain exactly the sound I wanted. There was a period of trial and error that was really troubling, like “did I make a huge mistake here?” Then I stumbled upon a YouTube DJ mix that had a rap beat with a female vocalist, and I knew that was exactly the sound I wanted to explore. My manager, Gary Salzman, says that I was the first teen to ever tell him I wanted a sound like this, and my vision was so outside the box and different that he wanted to work with me.
What do you want to contribute to the musical landscape overall?
Ideally, I would like to be the first teen face of trap music that pulls an urban vibe to mainstream popular music – a completely new genre of sound, unlike anything you’ve heard before! I’m working to create this with songwriters Alicia Madison and Lachi.
Tell us about your current single ‘Obsessed’ and the inspiration behind it.
‘Obsessed’ is based on a previous relationship, my first teen romance, where I experienced kind of obsessive behavior for the first time. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a horrible experience, and we still remain friends today. It’s more about navigating relationships with cameras everywhere, social media, Snap Maps, and the ability to track someone’s movements more than ever. There’ve been some remarks that I’m too young to sing about this topic, but I think it’s naïve to say that my generation wouldn’t know what this possibly dangerous personality trait looks like. I mean, we are hit daily with news of internet dangers, human trafficking, dark web stories, what weapons in the wrong hand can do – why would obsession be something too taboo to sing about?
Outside of your own music, who are you rocking with?
Chase Atlantic, G Eazy, Azide, Twenty One Pilots and Lil Miquela.
Tell us a bit about your work and passions OUTSIDE of music…
I enjoy dancing and fitness training, especially for my upcoming tour ‘Boys of Summer,’ which has kept me super busy. I’m 14 years old, so of course, spending as much time with my friends as possible is a top priority, and drawing in my sketchbook and writing short stories under a pen name. I also love to travel. This year I went to Scotland, which was absolutely wild to spend time in castles and been around so much history. The experience inspired my next upcoming track. I also spent time in London, and I’ve been fascinated with UK accents ever since.
Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” aka WTF?! moment…
Lately, my fav WTF moment is when I made a TikTok with my mom as a joke this week, and the joke was on me because all of a sudden it became viral. I normally average about 80 likes per post and this particular one currently has around 37,000 likes. It’s not just that my mom killed it, but the comments are just not very appropriate for someone’s mom! LOL, won’t be doing that again.
