Who Is Young Lyric?
Back Story – Born Lyric Michell Ragston in Houston, TX on July 30, 2000, Young Lyric developed a love for Hip Hop and dance at an early age. She recorded her first song at the age of 7 and performed it in front of her entire school that same year. She blew everyone away with her lyrics, delivery, dancing, and stage presence, and she has continued to improve and create ever since. Her energy is contagious and electrifying; and her style, creativity, and rap-skills are truly amazing.
The 18-year-old Hip Hop Princess and Internet Sensation from Houston, TX, with over 45 million views on YouTube and WorldstarHipHop is a breakout star of Lifetime’s new hit TV show “The Rap Game” (Season 1) produced by Jermaine Dupri and Queen Latifah!!!

The Hype Magazine got Young Lyric to weigh in on a few things:
From the outside looking in, who is the artist and individual “Young Lyric”?…
On the outside, I would hope that people see me as an 18-year-old female hip hop artist who is talented, focused, humble, hardworking, dedicated to perfecting her craft, and still chasing her dreams. I love music and performing, and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to influence and impact the culture.
At such a young age, what brought you to the entertainment industry and more specifically, music?…
My dad and my uncle were aspiring artists here in Houston, so I pretty much grew up in a studio… They were always writing and recording, and I always felt that I would grow up and be a rapper too. My uncle recorded my first song when I was 6, and I did a video to Young Jeezy’s “Lose My Mind” when I was 9 years old that got picked up by Worldstar and went viral. It’s been on ever since.
Tell us about your current project the “Future Queen” and what it means to you in the grand scheme of things?…
“Future Queen” is the album that I am working on now. It’s almost done and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it. It will have 14 tracks with production by DJ Chose, K.E. On The Track, Aaron Reid, and J-Scalez; and features by YBN Almighty Jay, Tokyo Jetz, and Slim Jxmmi of Rae Sremmurd. I put a lot of work into this project and, being independent, had complete creative control over the entire album. In the grand scheme of things, this will be an introduction to the new “grown-up” Lyric since I can express myself more now that I am 18 and not rapping just for the kids.
Who are some of the musical influences that move you and who would you love to perform with?…
I have always looked up to Nicki Minaj and Beyonce, and I am a big Cardi B fan also. Definitely influenced by Drake, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, and The Migos as well. I also like what the NBA Youngboy, Da Baby, Lil Baby, and City Girls are doing, and I love that there are so many female artists getting more attention now. I would love to work with any of those artists right now.
As a young artist and influencer, what do you feel has been your greatest motivation so far in your music career?…
Money is a huge motivation since I want to be able to live large and take care of my family, but my biggest motivation comes from my dreams of being successful in music and business. I have always seen myself as being a superstar and a mogul and I really won’t stop until I accomplish those goals.
Tell us a little bit about your passions OUTSIDE of music?…
Most of my passions are music related in some way, but outside of music I really enjoy traveling, shopping, and spending time with friends and family. I also want to start a foundation to give back to young kids as well.
Last but not least, HYPE wants to know… Knowing that you have been a part of Lifetime TV’s hit show “The Rap Game”, what can we expect next from Young Lyric?…
You can expect me to keep making music, moves, and money no matter what.. I personally am expecting a big record deal, major endorsements, and a world tour!!
