Premiere: R&B powerhouse TOYA NASH drops unrequited love banger “Now What”

Dallas native TOYA NASH is an R&B powerhouse who puts her classically trained mezzo-Soprano to work over funky, serpentine beats. Her vocals conjure up the classic soul sass of Tina Turner and Chaka Khan, yet aesthetically, she gravitates to more innovative production techniques, resulting in a sound that falls somewhere between Kelly Rowland and Aaliyah.

NASH’s newest single, “Now What,” blasts out of the speakers on a bed of chopped up horn samples, while she admonishes her former lover for being ‘all talk.’ The track really clicks into place after the beat tumbles into double time and TOYA begins the sexy call and response chorus, showing off the range between her guttural lower register and sultry falsetto. Around the two-minute mark, the songstress goes full Guns N’ Roses, displaying the kind of vulpine vocal chops that would make Simon Cowell proud.

According to NASH, “Now What’ is an unrequited love song about caring for someone deeply, having his back through his troubles, but realizing in the end that he doesn’t have your back in return.” She is obviously not the type to let that kind of behavior fly, and recording this single was, in many ways, her getting the final word. “The song is really about taking your power back and moving on with abandon. It’s an anthem.”
