HOFFEY talks new rhythmic electro-pop single ‘Alive’

HOFFEY is a duo based out of Vancouver, Canada. The duo, Jordan Toohey and Erika Toohey, met while studying music abroad in Sydney, Australia in 2014. They released their highly debut track ‘Love Is Wild’ in the Summer of 2018, which has already garnered over 1M+ streams.

Their new single “Alive” is a rhythmic electro-pop single with intricate electronic flourishes and soulful vocals. Listen now and reads our conversation with them below!

What makes ‘Alive’ different from your previous work?
We usually sing solo or unison. This is the first song we’ve released so far where both of us sing separate parts – showing both sides of the same story.

Can you describe the concept behind the new track?
The idea behind ‘Alive’ was to implement the emotion/feelings of the highs and lows young relationships have. It’s more so a story of a one night thing that turns into forever. We tried to take that feeling and put it into the instrumentation so the listener can really feel the desire and the meaning of being ‘Alive’ we were trying to portray.

How would you describe your evolution throughout your career so far?
We feel like the biggest thing we’ve learned over the years is to not try so hard. Our styles of music have changed so much individually and together and it continues to change. We want to make sure we never put ourselves in a box of what type of artists or genre we are. That we just let our creativity flow without caring what people think. I think that’s true art when you can really be yourself and make music that comes from your soul and not what you think everyone would listen to or what’s “cool” at the time.

What’s been the biggest change in your life over the past year?
There’s been so many big changes this year. But one is that we signed with Physical Presents in Toronto. Super exited to be releasing our EP with them!

What song by another artist do you wish you had written?
That’s a tough question cause there’s so many we wish we had written. But maybe something by The Beatles or John Mayer.

What else are you looking forward to this year?
We’re looking forward to playing more shows and releasing our EP and seeing where it take us!
