Premiere: The Greys ‘‘Unfortunately the Response Has Been Less Than Enthusiastic’ EP

Back Story – The EP, entitled ‘Unfortunately the Response Has Been Less Than Enthusiastic’ is a triumphant return for the band since their break-out hit single “Family Band” last year. That hiatus comes from the horror stories that we often hear about bands signing into deals that turn toxic and stagnant, which The Greys lived day-in and day-out until they were legally able to leave the deal only recently. Originally, the deal with that manager / label rep promised The Greys creative control and excited with the new prospect, the band allowed said label executive exclusivity to their artistry and trusted him with everything. Yet, by the end of the deal, the band felt like an object and were told things like “I own you” and “You will do your hair this way because I said so.” They were robots, expected to do as they were told, and were verbally abused if the band questioned anything that was told to them. Whenever they provided new material to be released, the response from was always, “Unfortunately the response has been less than enthusiastic.” And for a band who wrote, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered every part of this EP, this release is an anthem to all independent artists where being genuine may be the road less traveled, but worth it at the end of the day.

The Texas-born and Los Angeles-based trio The Greys – Sydney [22, vocals, guitar, piano], Jayden [vocals, piano, drums, rhymes], and Silas [20, vocals, piano] have a story that is anything but predictable. Born to worship pastors who led Texas megachurches, The Greys grew up around music. They can vividly recall working the merch booth and going on tour with popular faith artist Susan Gray, otherwise known as their Mom. By high school, the three budding writings began creating music together. A song about the tragic passing of their dog made it into the hands of an Interscope Records executive who immediately saw potential in the band. The siblings packed up and moved west, devoting the next year to writing, producing and recording countless songs influenced by a shared musical palette that spans everything from Frank Ocean to Switchfoot. After some years, the partnership dissolved, and this is when the band truly started to discover their own voices.

“The sound is like the color grey,” Jayden leaves off. “it’s not a dark or light color. It’s in between, but it could be used for either one. We make darker music. We make lighter music. It’s a mashup of who we are. We can do everything, but we’re always The Greys.”

It’s a good thing this young crew didn’t fall for the BS and showed the intestinal fortitude it takes to keep moving forward! Definitely ones to watch and listen to. Jayden did not misspeak when he described their sound and the project is a full ride, no skips in this writer’s opinion. Their range in timbre, takes you on a vivid journey which deposits you safely in the now…incredible music and inspirational story!
