Beacon is receiving early praise from critics and fans alike. Premiering the album with ATWOOD Magazine, they describe, “Vogelzang’s voice is an ethereal, lucid thing, filling her seventh album with the kind of storytelling ability passed down through decades of folk tradition – it walks the delicate line between the modern and the nostalgic,” while Grimy Goods praises, “it’s light and whimsical but hefted out with all the lyrical poetics of someone totally enraptured… it pulses with the kind of inward star-gazing that asks us to acknowledge the kind of wonder we should all share for our own selves.” Mystic Sons reviews, “The US frontwoman takes influence from The Staves… warm and wistful.”

Vogelzang recently released the first three singles from Beacon“Icarus,” title track “Beacon,” and the bouncy summer anthem, “Burning Star.” “Icarcus” was premiered alongside a video made by youth campers at The Rock ‘n Roll Camp for Girls in Los Angeles, a program that Vogelzang has been actively working with for several years. Campers participating in the “Music Video Program,” selected “Icarus” during a blind submission process and alongside a team of female filmmakers brought their vision for the song to life. Watch the video here. “Burning Star,” is a shimmering summer crush song, inspired by Yaki Kusama’s Infinity Room instillation at The Broad in Los Angeles, while “Beacon,” inspired by the feeling of finding home, captures the essence of the album with its accompanying video – a beautiful love letter to Los Angeles. Watch the video here.

Beacon was born from a place of searching – a theme found throughout Vogelzang’s life and career. Born in Boston, spending a decade in Madison, WI, and touring to every corner of the country in-between, Vogelzang has built her community from coast to coast, with her home on her fingertips, her music peppered with flavors of nostalgia and perpetual motion. After landing in LA and finding community within a weekly songwriting group she co-founded, “Song Salon,” Vogelzang soon became pregnant with her first child. It was with this new sense of community in Los Angeles and the news of her pregnancy that Vogelzang decided to record an album throughout the deeply transitional phase, despite – and because of – the uncertainty of what was on the other side.

This feeling of living within a transient physical state while experiencing life in a new place was the origin and inspiration for the album. Beacon was co-produced by Tyler Chester (Andrew Bird, Joan Baez) and found the pulse of the West Coast infused into the songs. “These songs have California in their blood. All of them written in this new city, on a new journey, climate, home, community. They were written to process these huge transitions – transitions of place, and into motherhood,” Vogelzang states. Beacon is her seventh studio album and celebrates the momentum of surrendering to the unknown. Her music transcends place by acknowledging the true illuminating source of soul and sound: people and self.
