Meet the Hoy Polloy

The Hoy Polloy recently released their much-anticipated hip hop album Valkyrie, featuring an impressive features roster that includes Jadakiss, Les Nubians, AZ, Mustafa Shakir, Scotty ATL, Vina Love, JO of the NOC, KD of the NOC, Ariel Morer, UZO, DJ Heron, and FlynnFluence.  The Miami-based multi-genre band reminds us of Childish Gambino and The Roots. And while they were originally known for their rock music, they have been making their mark in the hip hop world. They opened for Ace Hood on his Process II: Undefeated Tour, and were also opening acts for The Lox, Ludacris, Redman, Method Man, Pepper, Project Pat, GZA, and Talib Kweli. The Valkyrie album has a little something for everything and shows the wide range of musical styling The Hoy Polloy bring.

We sat down with lead singer K Sos, to discuss the new project.

Who is The Hoy Polloy?

The Hoy Polloy is a diverse multi-genre band from Miami, Florida. The band consists of myself [K Sos], multi-instrumentalist Frankie P, drummer Dave Nordstrom, guitarist Arthur Crown, and vocalist/producer K.D.

What makes Valkyrie different than your previous albums?

Valkyrie was conceived as a collaboration album in concept. The band picked both national and local artists we were interested in working with and decided to make an album full of those collaborations. While the album is all hip hop, the song diversity shows the band’s versatility and ability to adapt to almost any sound.

How would you describe your artistic evolution?

As with anything you’re passionate about, you get an opportunity to dive in deeper with more time and experience, and I feel that we are better than we’ve ever been right now, with so much left to show and prove.

What has been the biggest challenge being in this industry?

Getting our music heard. People have always liked it but getting it to their ears in such a saturated market is always a challenge for a band on its own independent label.

How does being from Miami inspire your work?

Miami is heaven on earth. We love our city so much, and it has tons of inspiring people and places to always keep us heavily stimulated.

You’re known for your multi-genre live stage performances, what has been your favorite show to date?

Our most recent performance headlining Black Market fest at Las Rosas was definitely one for the books. We reunited with ex-bandmate Panther, for the first time in 3 years to perform “Houdini,” that was special. At just over 200 shows now in the band’s history, we have had so many amazing experiences, it’s hard to pick just one!

Any plans to tour?

We are going to start demoing Valkyrie for local crowds at the end of October and November, and then plan to hit the road again in the spring once we have wrapped up our new rock record “Kiss the Princess.”

What is your personal favorite song off the new album?

Cash Game is def my personal fav; KD’s performance blows my mind on that song. But the album’s intro is a great way to get you ready for the experience ahead.

Anything else you would like to share?

The band looks forward to bringing the new album to the stage. The live arena is always where we have thrived, so we are very excited to share the new songs with people.
