Patrisse Cullors and Reform L.A. Jails Present RLJ Summit + Day Party: Mental Health Matters On November 9Th

WHAT: An event held by Reform L.A. County Jails and founder/chair Patrisse Cullors to holistically raise awareness about mass incarceration, mental illness, educate people about L.A. County jail reform, and encourage the local community to vote “yes” on the Reform L.A. Jails (RLJ) measure that will be on the California presidential primary ballot (March 3, 2020).

This event will include powerful programming, special performances, a world-class art exhibition, and more, as the team behind RLJ demands care, not cages. The focus will be on uplifting the stories of members of the L.A. community, while simultaneously generating the political support necessary to fix L.A. County’s broken jail system.

Support on social (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) by tagging @reformlajails #REFORMLAJAILS #CARENOTCAGES #CARINGISEASY.

WHY: L.A. County’s jail system is the biggest in the world and has a history of over-jailing the mentally ill. Right now, there are 5,000 Angelenos in L.A. County Jails simply because they suffer from mental health illness. 65% of prisoners are not receiving the mental health care and addiction support that they need. If RLJ is successful, our ballot measure will require L.A. County to invest in rehabilitation and mental health treatment. This event is geared towards ensuring L.A. County voters know about the RLJ ballot measure. The campaign has a goal of contacting nearly 300,000 voters in L.A. County before election day.

Reform L.A. Jails just concluded an inspiring summer with major victories such as the #CancelMcCarthyContract campaign and the unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors Motion, holding the Sheriff accountable for reckless spending.

ABOUT REFORM L.A. JAILS:

Founded by Patrisse Cullors, Reform L.A. Jails is a committee formed to support a 2020 county-wide ballot measure to grant the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Civilian Oversight Commission with subpoena power to effectively and independently investigate misconduct and to develop a plan to reduce jail populations and to redirect the cost savings into alternatives to incarceration.

Reform L.A. Jails represents a coalition of citizens, community leaders, businesses, and organizations that recognize we need a more effective strategy to reduce recidivism, prevent crime, and permanently reduce the population of people cycling in and out of jail that are experiencing mental health, drug dependency, or chronic homelessness issues.
