0Legendary Songwriter Holly Knight On “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” & Upcoming Projects
There is no doubt in my mind that you are very familiar with the music of Holly Knight. After leaving the band Spider, she would go on to write or co-write tons of pop and rock classics. This long list of radio and MTV staples includes Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield,” Tina Turner’s “The Best” and Scandal’s “The Warrior,” beyond songs recorded by Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Meat Loaf, KISS, Heart, Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan, G-Eazy, Elvira, Shawn Colvin, Less Than Jake, Otep, and Cheap Trick.
Speaking of Tina Turner, 3 of the songs which Holly Knight wrote for Turner are featured in the recently-premiered Broadway production of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. Meanwhile, Knight — Songwriters Hall Of Fame Inductee — has a musical of her own in the works, a memoir and a screenplay. The New York native is also an accomplished photographer, as showcased on her website, making it apparent that she has been flexing her creative muscles more days than not.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Holly Knight by phone on November 11, 2019 about Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, her forthcoming projects, finding success as a songwriter, the role that producer Mike Chapman played on her career and more. Additional info on Knight’s various projects can be found online by visiting www.hollyknight.com and/or following her via www.twitter.com/HollyKnightlife.
