0Actor, Musician & Author Leif Garrett On His New Book “Idol Truth,” Upcoming Projects & More
Leif Garrett burst onto the Hollywood scene in 1966 at the early age of five, debuting as an actor in the film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. After achieving tremendous success as an actor, Garrett took on the music industry, becoming a platinum-selling recording artist and one of the all-time biggest teen idols.
Garrett then decided to turn his attention to the acting world once again, co-starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s film classic The Outsiders in 1983. He continued to be cast in other notable roles throughout the 1980s in movies such as Thunder Alley and Shaker Run. In 1991, Garrett notably appeared with fellow former teen idol David Cassidy in the acclaimed 1970s spoof Spirit Of ’76.
In 1998 when the music arena became reacquainted with Leif Garrett via VH1’s highly-acclaimed Behind The Music. The response from the viewing public was sensational and it became one of the highest-rated episodes of the series. This led Garrett to form a rock band and toured across the United States while still making appearances on television and doing some theater work.
Garrett appeared within the “celebrity edition” of Fear Factor and went on to win the show’s grand prize in 2006. In 2008, the producers of TruTV’s The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest… added Garrett to their cast as a celebrity commentator, on which was featured for 14 seasons.
Back in July 2019, Garrett released the Idol Truth memoir through Post Hill Press. Co-written with journalist Chris Epting, the book is a no-holds-barred look at Garrett’s life. It is crammed with untold personal stories, wild celebrity anecdotes and photos from Garrett’s private collection. I had the pleasure of speaking with Garrett in December 2019 about Idol Truth, as embedded below.
