Getting in Tune With Dance Music’s Lost Frequencies

Back Story – Felix De Laet, better known by his moniker Lost Frequencies, has soared to success in the international music industry on many levels. Releasing his global smash hit ‘Are You With Me’ back in 2014 and quickly cementing himself as a name to watch, the track rapidly ascended by hitting multi-platinum status and taking the #1 spot in 18 countries. Take into further account that Lost Frequencies was the first Belgian artist to secure his first 5 hit singles charting at the #1 spot on the Ultratop official Belgian charts, as well as the first Belgian artist to hit #1 in the UK, he went on to release his long-awaited debut album ‘Less Is More’ in 2016 via Armin Van Buuren’s iconic Armada imprint that dazzled globally, certifying a future star for the next generation. Lost Frequencies also firmly established himself as one of the strongest, fastest rising talents with his debut entry into the 2017 DJ Mag poll at #26, the highest new entry of any artist that year.

As the accolades multiplied for Lost Frequencies, he not only took away ‘Best Breakthrough Artist’ at the Red Bull Elektropedia Awards in 2015 but also emerged victorious in the ‘Dance International’ and ‘Hit of The Year’ categories at the ECHO award ceremony (comparable with the U.S. Grammy’s), beating the likes of Adele on the latter to two of Germany’s most important music awards. Graduating to taking ‘Dance Act Of The Year’ at the Music Industry Awards to kick off 2017 in fashion, he also embarked on a huge North American Arena run with fellow chart-dominators The Chainsmokers earlier in June, signaling 2017 as yet another year that would continue to sparkle bright.

Lost Frequencies has continued to grow and gain global recognition through to 2019 and in 2020 is already projected to be one of the most booked performers in the realm of dance music. He recently released his “Black & Blue (The Remixes) set and it is an amazing taste of what this young lion has in store for the coming decade. Check it out below!

The Hype Magazine got Felix to weigh in on a few things!

How would you announce Lost Frequencies from the outside looking in?

Hi! I’m Lost Frequencies also known as Felix to my friends, family, and fans! And I make positive, upbeat and melancholic music that works both in the club and on a lazy Sunday morning.

What brought you to music?

I was experimenting with remixing and bootlegs just teaching myself from YouTube tutorials at first. I was making these edits from tracks I’d loved before so tracks from, say, Bob Marley as I was familiar with the basic melodies, rythms, styles, and lyrics. From there, one of my favourite tracks that was sort of “forgotten” to the wider public was ‘Are You With Me’ by Easton Corbin that also became my biggest and first hit when Armada picked it up and decided to sign the release. That is also where my name Lost Frequencies came from; I was adding new frequencies to these almost “lost”/ “forgotten” tracks.

Give us a bit of insight into the evolution of your music.

Well, the above is sort of an insight, but this year feels like one of the biggest shifts I’ve felt in my career; I released my second album ‘Alive and Feeling Fine’ and then went on my first “live” tour with a full band. It was a vision I’ve had for many years and since starting my own label Found Frequencies, I feel like my music reflects a more broad style of the music I make, and how I want to deliver it to my fans.

Your album “Alive and Feeling Fine” is quite the mix of sonics, what ignites a song for you?

It can be a lot of things – sometimes it’s a melody, other times I work with writers and vocalists to help me realise or extend my vision. I’m inspired by so much around me and I think any musician, or producer, or DJ is the same.

What does “Alive…” say about the development of your sound?

I think I’m a lot more calculated about the music I want to make but also a lot carefree about putting it out into the world – I try and make music that people want to party to but sometimes I also fit into the more indie-dance world (as I like to call it!).

What does it mean for you to have such an international impact in such a short span?

I released my debut single back in 2014, so I think I’ve worked super hard to make and then maintain the level of work that I want to over the past five years. I’m also so glad that my fans still show me so much love and support right up to this day, I wouldn’t be here without them!

What’s coming up for 2020? Tours, coming to America perhaps?

I’ve actually just visited America on my live tour, as well as Europe – we had a run of sell-out shows so it was super fun! But most likely I’ll be coming back to the US for both solo shows and the festival season – I always enjoy playing for my fans over there and festival season gets crazy, last year at EDC Vegas and Electric Zoo in New York was a standout; I hope to see you guys at a show when I return!

Any more hot collabs coming at the beginning of the year we should know about?

There have been some great talks about new collabs already but I can’t tell much about it but it’s going to be epic! I can’t wait to show you guys what exciting projects I have coming up!

Any thoughts for the new decade? Projections?

Predictions are that it feels crazy that this decade is ending with everything that the 2010s have achieved for me – I hope to be playing for my fans throughout this next decade and beyond!

Is there anything else you’d like to say to our readers?

Thank you so much for all your support!
