Introducing the Incredibly Talented Sonna Rele

Back story – Sonna Rele is a singer/songwriter that has the vocal reach of Mariah Carey, power of Whitney Houston and a unique style that blurs between R&B, Pop and Soul. Her love for music, comedic timing and sharing her story has garnered the attention of millions through her social media (2.5 million.) Some of her famous fans include Will Smith, NE-YO and Cedric the Entertainer

About her motivation for her latest single “Bad Bitch” Sonna says, “I have had an interesting journey within my music career with people telling me I need to look and act a certain way and that I wasn’t enough. “Bad Bitch”, is about staying true to yourself, loving yourself and respecting yourself enough not to submit to social media bullying or expectations. I want women/girls not to feel pressured into being something from societal expectations.”

In 2015 Sonna became part of the Disney family after performing the lead single “Stronger” for Cinderella soundtrack and has created songs for the award-winning UK soap opera Hollyoaks.

The Hype Magazine got Sonna to weigh in on a few things!

Your latest single “Bad Bitch” is a huge statement about the industry and how women are being exploited to sell products. What made you decide to speak out the way you did on the song?

Talking to a beautiful young talented 12 year old and asking her what her goals are.  Her reply broke my heart. She said she wanted to change her image to look like an Instagram model to be popular and make a living. Even if it meant her going under the knife. “Everyone’s doing it” is what she said. I want this song to inspire women and girls across the world to never feel pressured into altering themselves  for social gratification and help them see that happiness never comes from the outside. It all starts within.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

Music is and has always been my outlet. It’s a way of expressing my emotions, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s how I communicate best. Music is my therapy. I get to make music to heal myself and others in the process. It’s a win win.

What’s been your greatest triumph thus far in your music career?

I think getting to the point of realising how to let go. How to be free creatively. I would be really annoyed if something didn’t go the way I planned out exactly the way I thought in my head. Now I allow the journey to unfold in which ever way it’s supposed to. Getting to this point wasn’t easy. But now I can see how many amazing things life has to offer when you focus on being the best version of you and learning how to let go.

Where do you see yourself in the industry in the next 5 years?

Touring the world with songs I’ve created that inspire the masses. Being able to work and learn from my idols and becoming a better artist overall.

What’s been your craziest experience thus far in your career?

Playing at Wembley Stadium to 90,000 people. I’ve always wanted to perform there as I’ve grown up in Wembley all my life. Every time I would pass the stadium all my friends and family would look at me and say “one day you’re gonna perform there” and that day came and will live on in my memory forever.
