Lyndsi Austin Delivers A Gender-Flipped Cover Of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark”

LA-based band Tidal Babes is known for delivering edgy, beachy pop-rock hits. But this time their lead singer Lyndsi Austin goes solo with a chill, vibey version of Bruce Springsteen’s classic hit “Dancing In The Dark”. Produced by Concord singer/producer Chris Qualls, they’ve done an amazing job of taking a widely known track and making it sound uniquely new. Lyndsi’s smooth, relaxed vocals amidst upbeat drum patterns sounds reminiscent of a popular Robyn hit – danceable yet wavy with a hint of nostalgia. It’s always refreshing to hear a cover that doesn’t excessively mimic the original; I appreciate the creativity that comes with taking something that already exists and making it sound entirely fresh.

Lyndsi’s solo sound veers far from the bouncy vocals she delivers when fronting Tidal Babes. Alone, shes seems to have created a more chill, isolated feel – you know, the feeling you get when dancing in the dark. Let’s not forget to mention how bad ass it is to hear a gender-flipped cover; listening to Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics sung by a female artist proves captivating. “Dancing In The Dark” was the biggest of Bruce’s career in terms of chart position; whether realizing it or not, Lyndsi may be manifesting powerful beginnings to her solo pop project. Here’s to hoping we hear more solo tracks from Lyndsi – until we do, you can catch Tidal Babes at Programme Skate & Sound with Tiny Stills, Cailtlin Edwards, & The Standby. You can hear Lyndsi’s cover of Bruce Springsteen’s track “Dancing In The Dark” on Spotify.
