The Unveiling of Art Angel
Valerie Eskridge is a self taught artist from Smiths Station, Alabama. She has always, like most children, expressed an interest in art early on. However, she began a passionate love for art around age 10. She used to watch the Georgia Public TV program “The Joy of Bob Ross”. Ross was a landscape painter/instructor who ignited an interest in Valerie for landscape painting. Her father, who was a carpenter by trade, built her a small art studio on the side of his shop where she would spend most of her days. Growing up in a low income household, Valerie painted on everything that she could find including scraps of wood from her father’s wood pile, even the side of her art studio wall. People began to take notice of her talents; her family and her school teachers. One teacher nominated her for the Page One award by the Columbus Ledger Inquirer a local newspaper in Columbus, GA, for creating art for Smiths Station High School’s yearbook and winning first place at Columbus State University in a high school art exhibit.
At age 15, Valerie got a job at the retail arts and crafts store, Michael’s Arts and Crafts. Additional income allowed her to purchase supplies and she began to paint murals and do custom art for local businesses and customers. Art proved not only to be an outlet for her expression but also a profitable one. Valerie continued to expand her abilities and talents with face painting, body painting, mailboxes, t shirts, shoes and even lamps. She has painted murals for the Columbus government center in Columbus, Georgia, Zoe’s Pediatric Center, schools, churches, and body paintings in areas such as Atlanta Georgia and face painting in Charleston, South Carolina. She also volunteers her time to a nonprofit group called TYCT in Columbus, Georgia, where she offers free art classes to local community children. In 2019, she hit a highlight of her painting dreams creating a portrait of the R&B singer Sammie for him to display in his studio. Valerie continues to strive for building her brand and fulfilling her life purpose & passion in touching the community with her art.
