R&B/Hip Hop Duo GOLDSPACE Struggle with “Rules” in New Single

GOLDSPACE Maia Quin Andre Samuel

Los Angeles-based R&B/hip hop duo GOLDSPACE is back, showcasing singer/songwriter Maia Quin’s entrancing vocals and producer Andre Samuel’s brilliant musical arrangements in “Rules,” the first single off of their upcoming EP, Stupid Mind

The song, written as she was emerging from a particularly challenging chapter in her life, puts Quin’s confessional storytelling on full display, while Samuel’s beats and melodies weave together a musical tapestry that’s as compulsively listenable as it is deeply personal. Set for release on February 18th, “Rules” is a musical journal of struggle with mental illness and addiction – a theme that plays throughout the EP.

“There’s rules I have to follow or I’ll fall down,” Quin sings, kicking off a tale of struggle with school, sobriety, and self-love. In a music industry where drug use is glamorized and in a society where mental illness is stigmatized, Quin and Samuel offer raw, unabashed honesty that is ultimately empowering to GOLDSPACE’s listeners.

“Rules is one of those songs that just happened really quickly one night,” says Quin. “It’s about feeling out of control, but kind of accepting of that fact, like almost joking about it. It’s a place we’ve both lived before and work hard to stay out of. We hope other people can relate to that.”

GOLDSPACE was formed when Quin and Samuel met while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then, the pair has released a handful of singles that defy genres, skillfully ranging between future R&B, electro-pop, hip hop, and beyond. Their first single, “Heavy Hitter,” released in 2018, featured lyricist Saint Laurant and quickly found itself on Spotify’s biggest playlists along with the sleek “Think Twice” and the slamming pro-sobriety anthem “Drugz” (the latter of which will be featured on Stupid Mind).

A move to the West Coast has landed the duo in Los Angeles, where they’ve continued to captivate audiences with their trap-infused hip-hop style. To catch GOLDSPACE live and keep up with the latest news, follow them on Instagram: @goldspace_music.
