30 Fun And/Or New Food, Drink & Health Discoveries For Early 2020

With the 2020 summer season just months away, many of us are still looking to get into great shape and/or feel better. In turn, below are 30 fun, healthy and/or fashionable — and in many cases also absolutely creative — items I have recently discovered as a result of research, recommendations, and recent travels. Among the showcase events which I reviewed pitches for and from were Cercone Brown’s recent “winter house” hosted trip to Park City, Utah, the Natural Products Expo West, and the upcoming Bourbon + Bites happening via Rendezvous Event Management in New York City.

The Lore Co.

With three different collections inspired by three different parts of the world, The Lore Co. has the globetrotter in mind offering all-in-one body washes that clean your face hair and body allowing you to pack lighter.

Providing freshness and effective protection from day-to-day body odors, The Lore Co. offers an organic, chemical and aluminum-free deodorant that’s never tested on animals. Body washes and deodorants are available within the brand’s No1 and No2 collections and they come in TSA-approved sizes and kits. Its soap-oriented No3 contains no parabens, glycerin, phthalates, sulfates, gluten, harsh chemicals or preservatives.

Scanwell Health

Scanwell Health aims to make healthcare more accessible through smartphone-enabled, at-home diagnostics. Using Scanwell, everyday people can test from anywhere with their smartphone, get instant results, and immediately be connected to a telemedicine provider for treatment. This innovative approach allows people to avoid the time and expense of in-person doctor and ER visits without sacrificing quality of care.

The company’s first offering is the only FDA-cleared and over-the-counter urine testing app and test kit for urinary tract infections (UTIs); other solutions will follow in 2020. Affordable, forward-thinking and easy-to-use medical technology.

Hall & Oates’ Our Kind Of Soul LP

This one is the only musical entry on this item round-up, even though music is one of the world’s few universal languages, and often can be used for medicinal and healing purposes.

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame act Hall & Oates — comprised of singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Daryl Hall and John Oates — recently announced the first ever vinyl release of its 2004 album Our Kind Of Soul via the Friday Music collector’s club. The album, which debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard’s Independent Albums Chart, features the legendary duo reinterpreting some of their favorite soul classics by Aretha Franklin, The O’Jays, Gladys Knight and other musical legends. Mastered for the first time for vinyl by Joe Reagoso (Todd Rundgren, Doobie Brothers) and Joe Gastwirt, this limited edition deluxe double-LP re-release also includes three original Daryl Hall and John Oates compositions: “Let Love Take Control,” “Soul Violins” and “Don’t Turn Your Back On Me.”

Our Kind Of Soul vinyl release aside, the duo will be headlining a 32-date North American tour this summer with Squeeze and KT Tunstall supporting. This Live Nation-produced tour kicks off this May at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Notably, Hall & Oates just performed at New York City’s Madison Square Garden — “the world’s most famous arena” — and that girl sold out months in advance. Hall & Oates will also host their annual HoagieNation Festival this May in their hometown of Philadelphia. Tour dates and more can be found online at www.hallandoates.com.

Hopapops

Developed by Jeff Brinkhoff (founder of Red Monkey Foods) and partner Sameer Mehra (founder of Suminter India Organics), Hopapops is committed to sourcing sustainable ingredients and dedicated to making a positive social and economic impact in the communities in which its operates. Billed as “America’s next favorite snack,” Hopapops are a plant-based snack full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Used in Ayurvedic medicine, water lily seeds are an ancient superfood known for being highly nutritious and full of micronutrients like B12, folic acid, and iron. They are easily digestible and boast more nutrition than other salty snacks. Hopapops currently has three additional flavors that include White Cheddar, Coconut, and immediate consumer favorite Mango Habanero.

Marmot Moment Jacket

My recent trip to beautiful Park City, Utah was partially supported by Marmot, an outdoor clothing and sporting goods company founded in 1974. Keeping me espcially warm was the brand’s Moment Jacket. Windproof, waterproof, and breathable, the Men’s Moment Jacket is made with Marmot MemBrain Eco fabric plus 100% seam-taping, so you will stay dry no matter what the day brings. Keeping you further safe, its RECCO Avalanche Rescue Reflectors bounce a signal back to any and all needed rescuers should you encounter a rough situation of the slopes.

All great from Marmot are its Nano Pro Gloves. Also waterproof, they are dexterous and ideal for climbing. Its outer nylon is undeniably durable and rip-resistant. All the while, they keep you warm and padded.

Liveli Brain Health Supplements

Liveli is a line of brain health supplements — known as nootropics — as scientifically formulated by doctors who were educated at Stanford Medical School. Launched in 2018, Liveli is a line of brain health supplements, known as nootropics, scientifically formulated by two founding doctors who were educated at Stanford Medical School.

As noted by co-founder James Lee: “My journey of being diagnosed with a brain tumor is what inspired us to create Liveli. We explored supplementation and searched desperately to find the vitamins and extracts that are most essential for supporting brain function. We weren’t happy with the supplement options available, so we wanted to create one that would help others perform at their peak as well. As a result, I have made it my purpose to help others reach their full potential and achieve their ideal livelihood through Liveli.”

Disco Skincare

Disco makes guy-centric, non-toxic grooming products make it easy to keep one’s skin looking and feeling its best. Disco’s face scrub (retailing for $22) is a natural blend of apricot and chamomile that gently buffs away dead skin to leave your skin healthy and smooth. Recommended for usage once or twice a week, it blends natural exfoliants like apricot seed X alumina with aloe, which delivers moisturization and healing properties. Other ingredients include chamomile, sea kelp and papaya extract. Ultimately these compounds aim to prevent the damage often caused by environmental pollutants.

Disco’s face mask (retailing for $34) also works to purify, remove toxins, fight breakouts and sooth the skin, as made for usage one or two times a week. It contains activated charcoal, a powerhouse at absorbing toxins and extra sebum from the skin, as well as naturally-occurring kaolin x bentonite clay, which also have great absorbent properties. Papaya extract exfoliates, removes impurities and sloughs away dead skin cells, while willow bark extract holds astringent, anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties and also contains phenolic acids to help with skin rejuvenation. You can apply it when you have 10 to 20 minutes to chill, then rinse with warm water.

Breathe Right

The CDC estimates that there have been more than 19 million cases of the flu, with nearly 200,000 hospitalizations so far this season. In turn, taking precautionary measures like washing hands and staying home from work if you’re feeling sick may seem obvious, but that’s not the case for many Americans, as only 54 percent of Americans say they take extra measures to be sanitary when sick per a recent study by Robitussin. Beyond your typical treatments, you may want to look into Breathe Right nasal strips which can help open your nose so you can breathe better. You can also use Breathe Right in conjunction with any other treatment or preventative measure.

Reuzel Wood & Spice Solid Cologne Balm

Men’s grooming brand Reuzel is a brand I’ve covered plenty before, now Reuzel is making it easier than ever to smell good, even on the go. Its new TSA-friendly solid cologne balm — available now at Amazon — is a wax-based cologne. Packaged in a neat tin, it is convenient to carry in your toiletries kit and features a delightfully light fragrance of Wood & Spice with notes of lemon and clove.

Party Patch

From March Madness to Spring Break and your summer vacation, for these fun occasions where you will likely be drinking, don’t let a next-day hangover ruin the memories. Instead, you can get over the expected hangover with Party Patch. Better than any next-day electrolyte remedy, it is a natural, zero-calorie and water-resistant skin-adhesive you apply before drinking. In turn, if you just want a natural pick-me-up full of vitamins, Party Patch is also a solution on that way as well.

Stone Brewing Space Probe

Last year, Metallica and Arrogant Consortia — a Stone Brewing imprint — announced Enter Night Pilsner. Yet that is only one of Stone Brewing’s interesting collaborations from the past year or two. Enter Stone Viking Space Probe Double IPA. This 8.5% ABV beer boldly goes where no hazy brew has gone before with an unchartered combination of hops and Belgian Candi Sugar that earns it a spot among the ranks of Stone’s genre-defying creations. The beer’s name is a nod to the legendary space probes, Viking 1 and Viking 2, celebrated for their far reaches of space exploration.

Stone Viking Space Probe Double IPA was the third beer ever produced at Stone Brewing’s Napa spot. Its flavor profile was astonishing, lingering on palates and winning over craft beer connoisseurs in the same way it thrilled Napa’s prestigious wine drinkers. Stone Viking Space Probe Double IPA is dark gold with a subtle haze like that of a far-off nebula. Pineapple, peach, lychee, watermelon, papaya and even marshmallow can be found in the aroma. Ella and Citra hops impart flavors of tropical fruit, notably pineapple, peach, papaya and sweet guava, along with a hint of lime zest. It is creamy and smooth with warmth on the finish.

Frey Ranch Distillery Bourbon

Last month, the Frey Ranch Distillery introduced its inaugural Straight Bourbon Whiskey (45% ABV, $49.99 SRP) — as previously available as of December 2019 in the northern stretch of its home state of Nevada — to the Las Vegas market. Tucked away in the Lake Tahoe Watershed, Frey Ranch Distillery is Nevada’s first and only whiskey producer to grow 100% of its grains on-site. The Frey family has a long legacy of farming in this region dating back to 1854, which continues via Frey Ranch CEO, co-founder and self-proclaimed “Whiskey Farmer,” Colby Frey, who started the distillery in 2006 with wife Ashley.

Frey Ranch Straight Bourbon Whiskey is 100% sustainably-grown, malted, distilled, matured and bottled on the Frey Ranch property in Fallon, Nevada, for consistent quality as a point of pride. Aged for a minimum of four years, this 90-proof bourbon has a mash bill of non-GMO corn, winter cereal rye, winter wheat, and two-row barley, resulting in a flavorful bourbon that can easily be enjoyed on its own, yet also holds up in a variety of cocktails.

XED Beverages

Like many great drinking stories, XED — pronounced “crossed” — began in college. Co-founders Zeke Bronfman and Nate Medow were tired of beer, spiked seltzer and hard lemonade as their main drinking options. A desire for a freshly mixed drink in a can with high-quality ingredients fueled the two 20-year-old entrepreneurs’ ambitions to craft their own line of alcoholic beverages. With the launch of XED, Zeke Bronfman carries forth the family values of beverage industry giants Samuel Bronfman and Edgar Bronfman Sr. — Zeke’s grandfather — of Seagram Company fame.

XED will be launching in the spring of 2020 with four premium canned cocktails: Mojito, Moscow Mule, Gin + Tonic, and Vodka Soda. XED’s low-calorie, low-carb, gluten-free beverages contain 5.7 percent ABV and no preservatives nor fillers. In turn, less guilt about imbibing when choose to do so.

XED is backed by a notable advisory board including Strauss Zelnick (founder of ZMC and former chairman of CBS), Edgar Bronfman Jr. (former CEO of Seagram and managing partner of Accretive LLC), Adam Zoia (founder of GloCap), Susan Greene (former national sales manager at 21st Amendment Brewery), David Adler (Bizbash), Barbara Bernstein (Magnetar Capital), Daniel Budofsky (Pillsbury Winthrop Pittman Shaw) and Tommy Hester (Two Pitchers Brewing).

C.C. Filson Co. and Westland Distillery’s Coldfoot Whiskey

Founded in 2010 in Seattle, Westland Distillery is leading the emergence of the American Single Malt Whiskey category. Distilled, matured and bottled in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, its whiskies bring a new and distinctly American voice to the world of single malt. Established in Seattle in 1897 to outfit prospectors headed for the Yukon, C.C. Filson Co.’s 122-year legacy is built upon its reputation for honesty, quality and durability. Filson’s long-lasting gear is the choice of explorers, adventurers, ranchers, hunters, anglers, engineers and anyone with a passion for the outdoors.

This year it was announced that Seattle-based companies C.C. Filson Co. and Westland Distillery have a new collaboration entitled Coldfoot, a reference that harkens to the 1800s’ Klondike Gold Rush and evokes the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Coldfoot launched on February 20th with the release of a limited-edition American Single Malt Whiskey from Westland and a collection of new branded outdoor goods created by Filson. Coldfoot Edition 1 interestingly contains traces major components of Westland’s five-year-old stock and the vatting includes a dry-style Sherry cask.

Williams & Humbert’s Gran Duque D’Alba

Williams & Humbert’s Gran Duque d’Alba line of Brandy de Jerez is made in the designated denomination of origin known as Brandy de Jerez. Brandy de Jerez is the only spirit that preserves all the properties of a fine wine. Made in the traditional Solera method, which by law is aged for a minimum of 12 years and distilled using Airen and Palomino grape varieties, this spirit is slowly transferred into wooden casks. They are made of American oak which previously contained Gran Duque d’Alba’s famous Sherry. This system is also known as “rocio” and ensures Gran Duque d’Alba brandy’s consistency across taste, aroma, color and quality.

Said Rafael Rodriguez of Bodegas Williams & Humbert: “Mature cheeses, chocolate and spicy Mexican or Indian foods pair best with this brandy. Gran Duque d’Alba is perfect in cocktails, too, as the intense fruits, chocolate notes, vanilla, raisin and plum bring balance to the brandy’s acidity and fullness.”

Woodford Reserve Batch Proof 123.6

Woodford Reserve, “Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby,” is crafted at the historic Woodford Reserve Distillery, in Versailles, Kentucky. A National Historic Landmark, the Woodford Reserve Distillery represents craftsmanship with a balance of historic heritage and modern practices. Released February 2020, Woodford Reserve Batch Proof 123.6 is an annual limited-edition, high-proof expression part of the annual Master’s Collection series. A celebration of Woodford Reserve’s proprietary batching process – blending barrels and bottling the whiskey at its actual proof, straight from the barrel — Batch Proof is crafted using the same grain bill and process as Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Batch Proof however, takes Woodford Reserve’s trademark flavor range of sweet vanilla and toasted oak to a whole new level offering consumers the privilege of tasting Woodford Reserve in its purest form (and not the standard 90.4 for which Woodford is known).

CeraVe Healing Ointment combines a gentle formula which aims to provide intense, long-lasting moisturization, while soothing, temporarily protecting and helping to relieve dryskin..

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream absolutely got me through that recent trip to Park City, Utah where the air was dry and the altitude was almost always high. Furthermore, CeraVe products use patented Multivesicular Emulsion(MVE) technology that releases ingredients slowly over time, allowing them to absorb into the skin to hydrate & nourish, as well as restore and maintain the skin’s natural barrier.

Uncle Bud’s Hemp

Toni Braxton is a singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer, actress, television personality and philanthropist. Braxton has sold over 67 million records worldwide, making her one of the highest-selling female R&B artists in history. Braxton has won seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, and countless other professional accolades.

Braxton’s friend Garrett Greller is the co-founder of Uncle Bud’s. Having been diagnosed with arthritis at a very young age, Greller tried nearly every prescription medicine and over-the-counter pain reliever to ease his inflammatory pains. After little relief, he set out to find a natural alternative, and ended up working with a domestic, manufacturer to formulate a hemp-based natural solution that could help those who suffer from daily aches and pains and Uncle Bud’s was born. Interestingly, the new Uncle Bud’s Maximum Strength CBD line just launched this month at GNC.

I had the pleasure of speaking with both Toni Braxton and Garrett Greller by phone for The Hype last week and that February 2020 interview can be viewed by clicking here.

Chef Emeril Lagasse’s Power AirFryer 360

Emeril Lagasse’s Power AirFryer 360 rotisserie spit can accommodate up to a 6-pound chicken and also ensure that the meat of that chicken is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The rotation of the meat allows the protein to cook evenly in its own juices, more so than if one were to cook the protein on a cooking rack, with easy cleanup. The intuitive heating elements ensure the protein reaches the perfect temperature every time, so there’s no need to stand in front of a hot oven or fussing with a meat thermometer.

Accompanying the AirFryer 360 is a cookbook which is full of top-notch, Lagasse-approved recipes. This includes recipes for a Turkey Roulade with Peach & Sage and Cornish Game Hens with Honey, Lemon & Thyme. Rarely does a new kitchen applicance inspire creativity, but Lagasse’s latest cookbook ought to do that for you and plenty more if and when used correctly.

Sonoma Lavender Chinchilla Heat Wrap

Today, the products of Sonoma Lavender continue to be handcrafted in the Sonoma Valley with the same meticulous care and attention of 20 years earlier and are now sold at some of the finest gift shops and spas in the world.

This game has a cult following and takes 30 to 45 minutes to play on average, and is for 2 to 8 players. It is currently available on Amazon for $19.
