Dope Saint Jude Unleashes ‘Go High Go Low’ Music Video

Dope Saint Jude returns with an explosive new single and video – ‘Go High Go Low’

The ‘Go High Go Low’ music video is a vibrant depiction of Dope Saint Jude’s fierce personality, edgy style and identity as a black, queer woman from Cape Town, South Africa. It also serves as a love letter to Cape Flats, the southeast district of Cape Town where Dope Saint Jude was born and raised. She greatly values the community’s dedication to serving people of color throughout the apartheid and post-apartheid eras. The video predominantly features Golden Dish, an iconic Cape Flats restaurant that served minority communities when people of color were unable to access white owned restaurants in the CBD.

Stepping onto the scene, Dope Saint Jude made it clear that she was going to be more than just a rapper. She brought flair from her time performing as a drag king, an impassioned sense of strength and feminism, and created a voice for queer, female rappers in her community. Dope Saint Jude first struck with her 2016 EP, Reimagine. As she began to grab the attention of Highsnobiety, i-D, Boiler Room and Gay Times, the now London-based artist was selected by MIA to be a part of the H&M’s awareness campaign video for World Recycle Week in the same year.

Dope Saint Jude has also established herself as a strong advocate for feminism and utilizes her music as a vehicle to discuss gender, sexuality, and societal expectations. She takes major influence from the Riot Grrrl movement, so much so that she created a DIY zine that featured a wide range of queer and female voices to accompany her 2018 Resilient EP. This mentality is also shown in Dope Saint Jude’s involvement in her community and dedication to arts education with the iNtombi Workshop. Perfectly put by music scholar Adam Haupt, Dope Saint Jude is, “transforming South African hip hop by queering a genre that has predominantly been male and heternormative.” She is a force in the underground and queer rap communities in Cape Town.

‘Go High Go Low’ is available now on all streaming platforms.
