If ‘Love Is Blind’ Had A Theme Song, HOAX’s “more than you know” Would Be It

“More than you know, More there lies beneath the surface / More than I’ll show, I need you so / If there’s one thing that’s for certain, wherever you go, I’m going the same”

Indie Pop duo HOAX discusses the uncanny parallels between modern dating app romances and traditional arranged marriages in their latest single “more than you know”. The modern vintage track takes the listener down a ‘get to know you’ journey of love and how quickly people can go from not knowing anything about a person to committing themselves to them for the rest of their life. The timing couldn’t be more perfect; with reality show “Love Is Blind” being the biggest show on Netflix right now, everyone is talking about what it’s like to dive head first into a marriage after having only spent three weeks getting to know their partners. The comparison to dating apps is right on target. If you’ve ever used Tinder, Bumble, OK Cupid or any of the other popular apps making matches in the digital world, you know how the process goes. You chat (for a little or a long time), make an emotional connection, and then decide if you want to meet that person in real life. Going into a date or a first meet-up, you already have a sense of who that person is. But it’s the meeting face to face that really solidifies the deal. HOAX finds a lot of similarities with arranged marriages. Mike Raj, lead vocalist of HOAX, has a direct experience here as his parents’ marriage of 25+ years was traditionally arranged. The two barely knew one another before they tied the knot but luckily, it looks like they met the right match!

“I’ve recently been obsessing over the idea of algorithms, especially modern romances that propelled from dating apps. We would put trust into an algorithm that finds us matches based on different factors of convenience. You can trust in a computational programmed algorithm to find your perfect match — very much like how my parents trusted an analog version of an algorithm (aka my grandparents) to find a spouse. – Mike Raj (Lead Vocalist)

“Love Is Blind” has truly taken the attention of millions of viewers with its unwritten drama and suspenseful “I Do’s”. The experiment didn’t prove successful for all, but for the people it did prove successful for, we curiously watch while awaiting anticipated conflict from those uncomfortable ‘get to know you’ moments. HOAX’s “more than you know” is rooted in this unknown place, but follows a romantic narrative assuring listeners of a positive outcome (with full realization of the absurdity involved). With lyrics like “Every day the world is turning, Over and over / I need you more, Against all logic and discernment / Wherever you go, I’m going the same” it’s clear that despite the unique circumstance, the couple is dedicated to one another and the ultimate success of their sudden marriage. Inspired by classic Elvis and Beach Boys hits, HOAX adapts what they coin a ‘modern vintage’ sound, pairing seamlessly with the songs narrative.

Drawing from a wide range of influences like 60’s pop, 70’s Motown, and alternative R&B, HOAX likes to see themselves as “the beautiful sound of sadness”. Their music thematically focuses on the human condition, explorations of social constructs, and the decisions people make based on them, all tucked underneath pop melodies. “more than you know” is the band’s first release in 2020 following their 2019 singles – “Could”, “Unamerican Dream”, “You Get So Alone Sometimes”, and “unconditional” – all which will be part of the band’s debut album, b? (part i), slated to release in August 2020.
