Love, Labels & Living Sober – A Q&A With Beloved R&B Artist JoJo Hailey

JoJo Hailey plans to release a string of singles leading up to his solo debut album in 2020. The comeback is exciting and invigorating for JoJo – following several downward spirals with alcohol and health-related issues, JoJo feels grateful for the chance to start fresh by putting his own music and his family first. His wife, Tashaunda aka Tiny has stood by his side through years of ups and downs; now being a co-founder of their family-owned record label JT Entertainment. The love and devotion from JoJo Hailey’s fans stem back to his days with the beloved Jodeci as well as legendary R&B duo K-Ci & JoJo. Hits like “All Of My Life” peaked at #1 on multiple Billboard charts and was nominated for two Grammy awards. Needless to say, JoJo Hailey is no stranger to success and we expect nothing less in 2020. I had the chance to sit down with JoJo to discuss his comeback, his label, and his next steps.

You’ve experienced the music industry through many of its changes. What changes do you think made the industry better and what made it more difficult to navigate?

It’s easier to put music out now for independent artists than it was when I first started. Umm for me it’s a little difficult to navigate the internet and keep up with streaming. But I’m learning. lol

You’re returning to the industry sober and with a new record label. What inspired your comeback and how are you feeling about the next year?

I wouldn’t call it a come back because my music has always remained relevant so I would say I’m just trying something different for myself you know, a solo project. I’m feeling really good about the next year putting out new music not only on myself but my family also.

What are you looking forward to most as a solo artist? And what do you think your biggest challenges will be?

As a solo artist I’m looking to establish my own identity as JoJo Hailey. I think my biggest challenges will be me getting use to performing alone. But I’m here and ready for the challenge.

How do you feel R&B has changed over the past two decades?

R&B has changed a lot primarily because we do not talk about LOVE any more.

Do you feel like the industry takes care of their artist’s mental health and how do you think they can improve or help artists more?

No I do not feel that the industry takes care of our mental health. But I’ve learned that it is up to us to take care of our own mental health. You have to take a break sometime you owe it to yourself.

Your new single “Special” was a loving, romantic track right in time for Valentines Day. Will the rest of your solo releases have a similar vibe?

Yes because it’s time to get back to talking about LOVE.

How important is your sobriety to the success of your career?

My sobriety is very important to my career! I know that everyday is a task and I’m truly grateful that I am in a much better place far away from where I was back in the day. Thank God.

What are you looking forward to most in 2020?

The success of JT Entertainment and getting our music out there!

Be sure to watch out for the official remix to “Special” featuring none other than Snoop Dogg, set to release on April 3rd.
