When discussing the meaning behind the single, Sayge explains:
Toxic is about how we have an obsession with feeling something while also feeling nothing. How we can get addicted to drugs & alcohol but also people, emotionally abusive /abusive relationships. The addiction feels toxic, like a poison, but at the same time people feel like it’s what we need. We often get into these relationships and situations where it seems like there’s no out, no healthy one at least. So, we start to reminisce on memories of the past, when times were good. It’s something I have personally struggled with throughout my life.

Sayge wrote Toxic when he was in a relationship with someone who finally seemed “perfect”. She checked all the boxes. He was insecure in myself & where he was in life. He felt like he should’ve been further in his career, forgot that life is a marathon, not a race. He inevitably screwed it up & during a somewhat downward spiral to rock bottom, he wrote Toxic, in an attempt to let out the raw pain & emotion in a healthy way.
Sayge decided to release Toxic as his debut single because he felt like it summarized a growth in him, a moment of reflection. The song really helped him craft the sound that has defined his other tracks. Sayge went through a few different singles and ultimately landed on Toxic because it tells a story that is very personal to him– a battle that is very real to a lot of people. It is a message he felt like he had to say, and also one that had to be heard. When creating the song, it was important to Sayge to retain full control over the production process. Rather than handing over the reins of such a personal track, he decided to keep creative control over the music by using his years of experience to mix and produce the track himself.

In addition to Toxic, Sayge has finished working on several different EPs that all represent different times throughout his life while showcasing his classical jazz training and his influencers across the pop, R&B, and hip-hop genres. He also finalized a series of songs in Spanish that pay homage to his Venezuelan roots which will be released later this year. When discussing his upcoming music, Sayge explains, “A lot of my music has similar themes, even around my more pop or more traditional R&B songs. The message is the same, it’s about my ongoing battle with myself, my demons, & my life. My guitar solos and little production nuances, or the way that I mix certain things, allow me to experiment with different genres ensuring everything sounds cohesive sonically and the message always stays the same.”
