Into the questions…….

What first got you into music?

Music has been inside my soul ever since I can remember. I started singing as soon as I could talk. First to Disney movies with my mom and dad but by the time I was four I was hooked. I started in a group theatre class that included some dance and vocal exercises and did my first show at 5 years old at the Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Texas. The guitar and songwriting came later. I started writing original music at 11, some of which got featured in international children’s song writing festivals in Europe.

Who inspired you to make music?

There are so many amazing artists that inspire me. I’ll always say that Celine Dion taught me how to sing though. I received her album The power of Love one year for Christmas and sang along as I noticed my voice was developing. I’m sure the neighbors didn’t appreciate it all the time but I didn’t care. The women that inspired me to want to be a pop star were Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Strong, sexy, powerful performers.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

The music I create usually differs from song to song and who I am collaborating with. Most recently my manager Johnny Vieira ( of J.V.M ) has been writing songs with me and producing them. He is both a manager and writer / producer so that helps. Mostly I make music based on my moods, how I’m feeling that day, or what I’m passionately thinking about. Anyone that knows me knows that my emotions run deep & music is an amazing outlet for that. Once I was able to get past the feeling of being naked as I allow all my intimate emotions out through songs, that is. Lyrics are big for me and the music reflects all of my intensity, love it or hate, take it or leave it.

What is your creative process like?

Each song is different. Sometimes I’ll have an aha moment with a cool melody that just comes to me and then I’ll find chords on the guitar to accompany that. Or I’ll get a track and write a melody to that… or if I’m collaborating we’ll jam and start humming melodies and come up with something cool together. The melody almost always comes first.. then the lyrics as if by magic start filtering through. I love being creative. I need to be creative everyday or I go stir crazy. Whether it be through writing songs, creating music or even just experimenting with crazy make up looks, clothes and wigs… I have to be creative. Everyday.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

If I could collaborate with Linda Perry I could die a happy girl… She’s a badass songwriter and performer that has written some of the most iconic songs.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Opening for Lady Gaga would be a dream. I feel like we would connect on more levels than just musically. I really love her as a person beyond the music. She’s one of my heroes.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Never give up. Times are tough and it may seem like things will never get better… whether it’s the current craziness in the world or your own personal storm… the storms always pass and they lead to rainbows… more beautiful than you can imagine. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression my whole life and there was a time where I felt things would never get better and I considered giving up… at my lowest point I thought that was only way out… I’m so glad that I didn’t… because the most beautiful wonderful days of my life were yet to come.. and they’ve been amazing… and that’s true for every one of you. Never give up and believe in and love yourself because you are valuable. You matter and there’s not a single other person on this planet like you. Be you. Be strong.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Oh yeah. I’m always singing… bath or shower it’s always a concert. Sometimes I’m singing random melodies I make up… or I’m singing Queen or lady Gaga… or Elton John, Destiny’s child, there’s a lot of variety really.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Well, beyond my passion for music I also have a passion for acting… so no matter what I would be doing something creative. If I couldn’t act I would be an ice dancer… I know it’s random but they’re graceful and my petite frame would work well for it.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

I’ve performed in big stadiums in Europe for the festivals I mentioned earlier… my favorite was the Greek Olympic Stadium, that was surreal. Least favorite any bar show.. People just don’t care but you have to pay your dues… and I’m all paid up. We are hoping to be putting a tour together for early next year. Check the website KaliRoxx.com for updates.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

The internet has been around my whole life so I don’t think I’m quite qualified to answer that. I’m sure it changed everything though! Everything is digital and streamed whereas before there were CDs. But  it’s cool that vinyl’s are making a comeback though. There’s a distinct sound to a vinyl that just can’t be captured digitally.

What is your favorite song to perform?

My favorite song to perform changes day by day depending on my moods . I love my song Kinky written by me and Johnny Vieira. That one is really fun to perform and I really made it my own. If I’m feeling more emotional then any of my early acoustic songs are good go to’s… My favorite song I’ve ever written is Invincible. I love performing it because it captures me as a person.. how through all the struggles and being completely broken down I found myself and am now Invincible.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

I got suspended from school my sophomore year of high school for 2 weeks…  that was the most trouble I’ve gotten into.. Up until that point I was a super good kid, straight A’s, perfect attendance, really annoying actually… I was just going through a rebellious phase I guess. I just wanted to feel what being “bad” would be like…

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Ironically enough it was a quote on a poster at school. “Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the act of doing something in spite of fear”. That stuck with me for a long time. There have been many times in my life and career where I’ve had to be courageous and it was comforting to know that I wasn’t doing it wrong, by still being afraid… Mariah Carey also gave me some of the best advice in regards to performing that I’ll never forget. I said I was nervous and she said “do not ever let them know that you’re nervous. Believe in yourself because if you don’t, they won’t.. You’re amazing, now believe it.” That was lifechanging, coming from one of my heroes and one of the best vocalists of all time..

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?  What’s next for you?

The industry is challenging… but I love a good challenge. I wouldn’t change anything except for maybe make streaming a better source of income for artists, as it stands they don’t really make anything off of that. Currently, I’m at home like the rest of the world but I’m writing and recording a bunch of music. Once things go back to normal I’ve got some amazing writing sessions set up with some incredible people in LA. My manager Johnny Vieira is more like my partner and together we’ve been writing and recording some amazing music…Ever since I signed with him amazing things have happened including some big meetings he is setting up for us. Needless to say I’m excited for these next steps. Me and Johnny ( Vieira ) make the best team and I appreciate all his support. He truly believes in me one hundred percent so I feel my career is unstoppable..

How important is the current climate crisis to you and how do you think  you could help?

I think the climate crisis is a big deal that we need to take more seriously for the future generation’s sake.. I personally have been making some changes in my life to help with that like drinking filtered water from a home system instead of water bottles.. I think the current world events forcing us all to stay home will have a positive impact on the environment. With how much things have improved over a short time there is hope that small changes in our daily behaviors can make the difference. For now life and my career both have a bright future.
