A Chat with Roots Pop Rocker Eric Reed

Eric Reeds style takes you back to Rocks Roots with a mashup soud of Rock, folk, blues and Country Music. Echoing Retro Vibed sounds of The Byrds and Tom Petty with Dire Straits to Ryan Adams influence. Eric finds a way to draw people in  and let them experience the lyrics on a personal level, finding  a way to connect to those who hear his music.

Growing up in sleepy Bakersfield, Calif., Eric Reed dreamt of making music in a creative community. He yearned to surround himself with artists to inspire, and who could inspire him, as he pursued a vision that began taking shape when he was a boy playing guitar, learning the cello, singing in choir and hanging around recording studios in his hometown. Today, Eric  is living out that dream in the famously artistic Los Angeles enclave of Venice, where he is one of the most familiar and dynamic presences on the local rock music scene. Eric  has put some of his most personal work into his new solo album “A Perfect Life”. With tracks like “Ain’t Enough” and “Crumbling Down” having a raw Nashville country rock sound the album shows its versatility veering off into the blues as well as some heartfelt ballads ending with “Now I Have The Beat” a moody rock song. “You will hear a blend of all of my influences growing up from Rock, Country to Americana. This album is 100% authentic and a true representation of who I am. All of the music I write comes from the heart and life experience”. – Eric Reed. It’s just a matter of time before his music reaches a larger audience.

What first got you into Music?

First and for most I Was around music all the time at an early age.  My two older brothers and my mother had music on 24 hours a day.  They all had completely different tastes so naturally I listened to all of it which really I think kind of defines the music I play.  My brother Scott played guitar and I would always sneak in his room when he was away and play his guitar.  Eventually he sat down and taught me a few chords and that was it that was the beginning of this journey for me.

Who inspired you to make music?

I guess my inspiration came from the stories of people just like me that had the same dreams that were just a little farther along in the process than I.  Of course there were also the stories I wanted to share about who I was and all my experiences and deep thoughts.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

For sure the music I create is a mash up of everything I listened to growing up from Rock, Folk, Country, Rhythm & Blues.  It tends to be an emotional rollercoaster, really heartfelt yet fun and with a touch of sarcasm here and there.   I guess artists like Tom Petty, Ryan Adams, George Strait and Rob Thomas come to mind.

What is your creative process like?

For me being a Pisces I get moody so sometimes the creative process is really easy and other times it’s a nightmare. There’s no real rhyme or reason for my process sometimes I have some lyrics first sometimes I have the melody first.  Sometimes I can write a song in 15 minutes and others have taken me 10 years ha ha.  so I just kind of naturally go with it whatever it is.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Man I’d love to collaborate with Ryan Adams I think our styles are very similar.

If you could go open a Show for any artist who would it be?

So my music is a little more rock ‘n’ roll than his I’d still love to open up for George strait. The other I would have to say is Chris Stapleton I just think he’s the best out there right now.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

First of all tell my fans thank you from the bottom my heart for even listening to one single song I play and I would also tell them to follow their dreams as well and don’t ever give up because I didn’t…

Do you sing in the shower?

Believe it or not I am not a shower singer I just get in and get the job done and get out.

What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career?

Well I’m also a trained bartender so I guess I would probably just be doing that.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

In Los Angeles I’ve played everywhere. The Mint, The Whiskey, The Viper Room, Molly Malone’s.  You name it I’ve played there.  I currently have residencies at The Grafton, The Viper Room, The State Social House all of those venues I love playing.  My least favorite you probably have never heard of but it’s in Santa Monica.  I have shows coming up all spring and summer as long as everything gets back to normal so “to be determined.”

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

The Internet has had a polarizing effect on the music business. I think in some areas it’s been bad and in other areas amazing. For a person like me being able to produce my own music and release it and everything in between its been great but the bottom line is you still have to be good If you want a long lasting career.

What is your favorite song to perform?

My favorite song to play is whatever new song I have at the time. I also absolutely love playing Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones.  I usually play that at all of my shows and sometimes with celebrity guests

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

I once got drunk and crashed a friends car in another state when I was only 15. That was a nightmare.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Best advice i’ve ever been given was to be true to myself. I think about that advice daily.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be? What’s next for you?

I’d get rid of the pay for play stuff going on and I’d really like to see more Rock clubs open up.  I was set up to do some touring this year and then enter the studio this winter to record my follow up album but now with everything going on in the world the latter looks more realistic.

How important is the current climate crisis to you and how do you think you could help?

It’s very important to me and I try to do all I can personally but I think I would definitely like to raise more awareness if I had the platform to do so.  Until then I will just try to pass it on to whoever listens.
