Who Is Tribe Mafia?

Austin, Texas originals Chinasa Broxton and Dashawn Daniels are continuing to make their mark in the music industry and are proving themselves to be the next dynamic duo as Tribe Mafia. From recording songs on cell phones in their high school bathrooms to touring internationally with Hip-Hop/R&B legend, Akon, on one of the biggest stages in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the group shows the world that the sky’s the limit.

For the two, the road to success wasn’t all that perfect. While chasing their dream with unpaid debts and college loans accumulating, Chinasa and Dashawn eventually were led into homelessness but found a very supportive community along the way. This, in turn, led them to give their support to the homeless of Austin through Austin Resource Center for the Homeless after their music gained momentum and more opportunities began to open.

The Hype Magazine got Tribe Mafia to weigh in on a few things!

From the outside looking in, describe the dynamic duo Tribe Mafia.

Chinasa: We are like birds, we adapt and then we sing. Think of Tribe Mafia as an open canvas.

Dashawn: We like to experiment with a wide range of sounds whether it’s Hip-Hop, Dancehall, Soul, R&B, Pop, or even EDM. We travel a lot, so our inspirations are built from the environment around us.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

Chinasa: What brought us to the entertainment industry was watching, listening, and admiring various music legends while growing up. Michael Jackson, Master P, Salt N Pepper D’angelo, Maxwell, Usher Donnell Jones, Anthony Hamilton, Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z are some of the many artists that inspired us. We found it really moving for us to witness the audience’s reactions to the presence of these stars on stage. The way they took over the stage and gave the audience a great show is something that we found really captivating.

Dashawn: We wanted to have that same reaction from our audience. Our involvement with music performances began by doing local talent shows and musical theater in grade school. What really sealed the deal for us was not only seeing a great number of support but also finally being able to have a check written out for us. To be compensated for something that you’re passionate about is a blessing. This is our dream job and we get to do this for a living.

What are some of your highlights on your journey?

Dashawn: Traveling and meeting new people while on tour with an international star like Akon, in São Paulo, Brazil. In addition to traveling, I think being awarded “Local Artist of The Year” in Austin, Texas is such a blessing.

Chinasa: Another highlight is having our song “ Can’t Let Go ” with Maleio, Erik Goca & Rora Wilde on rotation on many radio stations including Kazi FM, KUTX and Sirius XM radio. Although the festival has been canceled, it felt great being noted as an official SXSW 2020 artist and a keynote speaker. Other than that, helping other independent artists build a name for themselves, having merchandise, and building an even bigger fanbase with people who truly care about us is among the many highlights on this journey.

Tell us about your current project.

Dashawn: Our new project “TEEPEE GANG” became available on all streaming platforms Friday March 13th 2020. The TEEPEE GANG LP has a total of 8 tracks, including our fans’ favorites “Triple Double” and “Still The Same.”

Chinasa: This project is loaded with high energy songs, and even a cute sneak diss to a former associate of ours. We believe our listeners and new listeners will have a party jamming this new project.

What are you most looking forward to in 2020?

Chinasa: Although one of our big excitements was performing at SXSW we still have many things to look forward to. Here is just a small list of what we are most looking forward to this year: The release of our Hip-Hop LP TEEPEE GANG, the release of our Dancehall EP It’s a Tribe Ting’ in June 2020, attending the BET Awards June 28th, our debut album WAMPUM fall 2020, and most importantly, deciding which country we will be visiting year.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you as an artist?

Dashawn: For new listeners, I would suggest listening to “Triple Double” because of its message and catchy tune. “Triple Double” is basically the anthem for our city. This song sounds like a jingle that you would hear playing on a commercial for the ESPN sports channel.

Tell us a bit about your work and passion OUTSIDE of music.

Chinasa: I’m a vegetarian, so most of my free time consists of “Pinterest-ing” recipes.

Dashawn: Not only am I an artist musically but visually as well. I paint a lot of oil and pastel paintings. Aside from our personal interests, we spend a lot of time as community volunteers at the ARCH (Austin Resource Center for the Homeless). Over there we donate our time to the community playing basketball with the youth, checkers and chess with the elderly, and giving speeches to the community volunteers and members about actively supporting each other, especially those who are in poverty.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know… What’s your CRAZIEST “Where do they do that at?!” aka WTF?! Moment…

Chinasa: Our most recent “WTF” moment is a “beef” related dispute with another artist. I will refer to the other artist on this response as “that other guy” because as of right now, we find his name very distasteful. We are in an ongoing dreadful legal dispute with our song “Can’t Let Go.” The battle is between ownership of the musical composition of that latest release. We have proof of dates, copyrights, text messages, videos, and witnesses that can speak on our behalf that clearly implies this song is indeed to be ours. If the “other guy” would have helped with composing the lyrics to the song, buying the beat, or coming up with melodies, then the narrative of this legal dispute could have been up for negotiation. In other words, we did 100 percent of the work.

Dashawn: Here is the inside scoop on how all of the craziness began. Once upon a time, we were all happy with each other’s company. We are also under the same distribution deal from the company, Sony The Orchard, on behalf of Indie Nation’s independent label. The “other guy” asked us to collaborate on a song and we accepted. We found a producer who made the instrumental for the songs and then we offered to send our vocals from our home studio. The “other guy” declined and offered to fly us out to his studio to record. We accepted. Little did we know, the “other guy” does not know how to write music, he has others write for him. We also spent hours in the studio teaching the “other guy” how to correctly deliver the lyrics and melody based on how we wrote it.

Chinasa: Fast forward to late 2019, we toured together in Florida. This is where the drama between us and the “other guy” escalated. During one of our showcases, the “other guy” threatened our assistant manager and was ready to put his hands on her. As a result, he was kicked out of the club and escorted by the club’s security. We ended up cutting out tour dates in Florida short because of that incident.

Dashawn: After we made it back home, to Austin, Texas, we received a glorious amount of harassment via Instagram followed by a threat text from the “other guy’s’” father/manager saying “Broxton you f-cking scumbag, wait till I see you.” We decided to cut ties with the “other guy” completely and to focus on us 2020. Doing so, we just re-recorded the songs that we wrote, which was “Can’t Let Go” at our home studio and released it on Valentine’s Day.

Chinasa: The “WTF” headline for us is that the “other guy” is claiming the song is his because he paid for the studio session. However, that is not how ownership of musical composition works. He may own the masters of that session, but he does not own the intellectual properties and composition of the work itself.

Dashawn: On the other hand, the “Where do they do that at?!” is also its own headline, because “this guy” has not only made a false claim on our song, but he has created a fake “work for hire” agreement with forged signatures of our names. In short, This guy is dangerously insane and our attorney is ready to take on our legal matters in court if needed. We are sure that we will be back to share more Tribe Mafia WTF stories with you in the future, as our music career blossoms.
