Cup Share Single + Video “Nothing Could Be Wrong,” LP Out 5/8

Today, the loud, rousing, brash Brooklyn-based garage-psych rockers Cup are back with a new video and title track “Nothing Could Be Wrong.” Yesterday, Alt Citizen premiered the “cheekily twisted, unrelenting nostalgia and strong Friday the 13th vibes” music video, additionally praising how Cup effortlessly blends together their influences, “from psych and surf to jazz and metal in a way that combines the most appealing aspects of each genre.” In typical Cup fashion, “Nothing Could Be Wrong” features punchy drums, killer guitar riffs, and heavy vocals to create a groove-heavy song with a powerful chorus about our modern world.

This the third single off of their upcoming album Nothing Could Be Wrong, due out May 8th and now available for pre-order via Aagoo Records.

Once the band has been turned into vampires, danced around on the streets, and bit into a few victims of their own, what is there left to do but to drink a bunch of blood and party with your newly immortal friends? That is, until the Vampire Queen Kelsey leads the band back to her lair to show off her pets (her real-life lair and pets, fyi) and reveal the true mastermind behind it all: the red mannequin head they cultishly worship (which is featured on the album artwork, as well). Nothing could be wrong, indeed–a mantra that has oddly and accidentally become more prescient than ever.
In a way, writing this album felt like starting from square one. The Cup process was simple for previous albums: Tym wrote, recorded, and mixed full albums, then he and the band would play shows. Once the current lineup materialized, with Kelsey on drums, Freddie on bass, and Chad on synth/guitar, Tym realized that process wouldn’t work anymore–they would have to all work together to write something new.

Kelsey comes from a heavier metal background, though she has played in bands of many different styles, as does Chad, who is also influenced by surf music, and Freddie is firmly in the world of the jazzy, angular, and avant-garde. Combined with Tym’s punk and psych sensibilities, the new songs took a darker, but more dynamic tone, while keeping some of the original Cup quirkiness.

They wrote furiously for months, then decided to head to Strange Weather, a studio in Brooklyn, to get them all down on tape. Garrett de Block worked as engineer and de facto producer, helping the band get great performances and parts down in single takes. Mark Anderson, a good friend of Tym’s who runs a studio in Denver and drums in various touring bands, mixed, and April Golden at Golden Mastering, who has worked with Aagoo Records before, mastered the album.
