“Game Of Thrones” Star Hafthor Björnsson (“The Mountain”) To Host New Competition TV Series

Until recently, Hafthor Björnsson was best known for playing Ser Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on iconic series Game Of Thrones. The 6’9, 450-pound weightlifter from Iceland is the new deadlift world record holder — with an unprecedented deadlift of 1,104.52 pounds on May 2, 2020 — and is also looking to expanding his entertainment prowess via a newly-announced television series.

Thor “The Mountain” Björnsson is teaming with Wheelhouse Entertainment’s Spoke Studios for a new competition series that challenges top athletes to fight it out in unique bouts of strength and endurance, all with the ultimate goal of completing against Thor to “Beat The Mountain.”

Said Eric Wattenberg, Wheelhouse Group’s Chief Creative Officer and also President of Wheelhouse Entertainment: “Thor’s incredible deadlift last weekend made news around the world and rallied millions to share in a stunning athletic achievement. While he’s definitely one of a kind, we see this show as inspiration for anyone that wants to push boundaries or cheer on those who do. No doubt Thor is built to move mountains, but he’s also a disciplined team player and a super-nice guy. We’re excited to partner with him on this new series and to see his fanbase expand.”

Thor Björnsson — who yours truly interviewed previously for the Paltrocast With Darren Paltrowitz podcast — is altogether a multiple world record holder and was winner of 2018 World’s Strongest Man and the 2018 and 2019 Arnold Strongman Classic. Born in 1988 in Akranes, Iceland, he started his athletic career playing with several Division 1 teams in the Icelandic Baskeball League System, even playing for the Icelandic National Team in 2006.
