Who Is The Real Mckoy?

Jeremy Lewis Mckoy known professionally as The Real Mckoy, was born Jan 6, 1987, in Fayetteville North Carolina. Mckoy was raised in the small city of Dunn located 35 miles south of Raleigh. Mckoy is a 2005 graduate of Triton High School.

Upon graduation, Mckoy attended North Carolina A&T State University, for 2 years. Afterward, Mckoy enlisted in the Navy, serving honorably for 6 years.

Mckoy is also a  graduate of Campbell University with a BS in Social Science. Mckoy has also served as a teacher and mental health counselor. Mckoy has always had an interest in pursuing a career as an artist, often participating in cyphers in high school and writing from time to time, however, it wasn’t until 2018, while working as a mental health counselor, McKoy decided to pursue a career in music.  In January 2019, McKoy quit his job to pursue a career in music.

The Hype Magazine got Mckoy to weigh in on a few things!

From the outside looking in tell us about The Real Mckoy!

What you see is what you get! Lol I know it sounds a bit cliche, but that’s how it is for me. I’m a person that genuinely cares about the well being of people and society. I’m far from a perfect person and I have definitely had my share of trials and tribulations in life, however, I’ve allowed those tests to make me stronger.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

I’ve always been a fan of music and I enjoy making music. It’s kind of like my therapy and/ or self-expression.  I understand the power and influence music has in society, particularly in the hip hop culture. So I guess it’s like I enjoy using my self-expression to help others.

What do you want fans to get from your music?

I want my fans to get good vibes, motivation, and inspiration. I would have to say that motivation would have to be what I want my fans to get the most because with motivation comes inspiration and good vibes.

Tell us about your current project and what it means for you

My current project is “Carolina Blues Vol. 2: The Passover”. This project means a lot to me.  It is a project where I opened myself up spiritually as a person.  The significance of this project is the correlation or comparison between the Passover as referenced in the Bible (which as you may know is the story of how the Israelites journeyed from slavery to freedom) and the oppression/slavery that we face in America today.

Tell us about your work and passions outside of music

I like to spend time with family, play basketball, do research. I love doing research!  I can sometimes spend hours at a time doing research.  I also coach youth basketball and baseball.

Last but not least, The Hype Magazine wants to know about your craziest “Where They Do That At?!” or WTF moment thus far in your career!

Damn, where do I start! Haha. I haven’t had too many WTF moments.  But there are a lot of “industry scammers” that take young independent artist money, promising to provides certain services but never do. I learned early on about that the hard way. But even with that being said, I still see the beauty in that experience because I feel it made me better on the business side of things and made me smarter when it came to investing in my craft. To be a BOSS you gotta take some losses.  It just ain’t no way around it.
