0 Exclusive Interview with MESSIAH YOUNG, College Student Beaten by Atlanta PD

Over the past weekend tensions escalated around the protests for the murder of George Floyd in several states around the country. In Georgia, two college students became victims of overaggressive policing that was meant to subdue alleged protestor violence in the city of Atlanta. recently sat with Messiah Young, who detailed his traumatic experience at the hands of Atlanta PD and his recovery process in the aftermath.

Young, a Morehouse rising senior and his girlfriend Taniyah Pilgrim, a fellow rising senior at companion school Spelman College, were beaten and tasered this past Saturday night while their car was stuck in traffic. Young gave chilling details of the horrific encounter saying, “I don’t want to die is what kept going through my mind…every time I close my eyes, I’m literally remembering and being pulled back into the moment. I literally try to just erase it.”

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms called the video “disturbing,” and swift action was taken as two of the officers were fired within 24 hours of the event.

“As incidents of police brutality repeatedly take place, BET will continue to use every resource at our disposal to amplify these stories, inform our audience about their rights and speak out against injustices across our country. Empowering our viewers and community is essential to our brand,” said Amy DuBois Barnett, Senior Vice President and General Manager of BET Digital.
