Who Is Dev McCray?

Dev McCray is a new find for us but he’s been rocking steadily since 2014. Dev has demonstrated his superstar potential by rapping about his black identity and diving deep into the ups and downs of his relationships. In his recent single “Peace Be Still” he delves into the current climate surrounding police brutality and spits with the emotions of a collective of millions who’ve been downtrodden and beleaguered by a justice system that has failed on a colossal scale.

Dev is one to watch for the future as he’s demonstrated an ability to harness his pain and paint lyrical masterpieces that transport the listener into his story, ensuring them he’s sees and shares their experiences while depositing them safely on the other side.

The Hype Magazine got Dev to weigh in on a few things!

From the outside looking in, who is Dev McCray?

I’m just a quiet church boy from upstate NY LOL. Though I am an introvert I like to have fun.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

Well I grew up around music being in church. My mom sings, my sister sings, a bunch of family members as well. My mom also being in charge of the children’s choir had me in it. So it was always a part of me. As I grew older it just spoke to me to more. Being able to shape a sound, put words together, express yourself by making YOUR own music is amazing.

What do you want people to get from your music?

I want to provide good energy. If I can help someone in a situation whether they’re down, needed closure, or if they just need to know they’re not alone… anyway I can help I hope I do.

Tell us about your current project.

My current project is titled THE RENEGADE.

We live in a world where negativity, ignorance, hate, lust,  being lost (just to name a few) is a norm. Down to how we act, portray ourselves and live on a daily basis… even down to the most popular music. All of these “lost” ways are a way of living now and that’s not ok. The albums about me being human, going through these humanly things, but ultimately breaking through to become who I’m supposed to be and not staying lost. It’s my journey of owning my responsibilities and letting people know it’s ok to be different and go against the grain. Rebel a lot of bit.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you as an artist?

For new listeners, I would recommend my song Missed Church because it highlights my energy, creativity and pieces together who I am as an artist all in one record.

Tell us a bit about your work and passions OUTSIDE of music…

Outside of music I like to travel, spend time with my family, anything that’s art related (drawing, painting, art exhibits etc). I want to get more into helping people anyway that I can as well. Donating to charities, helping the homeless, feeding the people who don’t a meal every night and give back. My mom taught me giving is a greater gift than receiving.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” aka WTF?! moment…

I would say when Donald Trump got elected. How do we go from Obama to Trump..??!!
