Kristen Karma QnA

Kristen Karma is an award-winning singer-songwriter with a music career that has already blossomed in the pop/dance scene in her hometown of Vancouver. Now located in Toronto, Kristen Karma is no stranger to the ever-growing music industry.

Even though much of her formative years were devoted to a theoretical and exacting world of ballet lessons, Air Cadets, Military Marching Bands, and The Royal Conservatory of Music, some of the only evidence that remains of her past is the neon pink tulle that shoots out from under her black corset. It’s undeniable—Kristen Karma is a band nerd. But she is a band nerd who might punch you in the face for showing up late to practice.

Her brand new single “Dear John” released on October 19 is a heartwarming, and brilliantly crafted song that is sure to tug on the heartstrings. With it already winning Best International Song at the American Tracks Music Awards in Los Angeles, reaching #35 on the iTunes Canada Pop Charts, and placing in several International Film Festivals, Kristen features up-and-coming artist Marian Hanna and rap artist Mr ATP for a well-rounded and thematic song that is sure to make an impact on any listener who has lost a loved one.

About

What first got you into music?

Music has always been apart of me, put in Elementary School I asked my parents for a piano and once I got that, there was no stopping me.

Who inspired you to make music?

Music is an outlet for me. I can be shy at times and instead of holding it all in, I write and sing and get my emotions out that way.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

The Music I create is a mix of dance beats, wicked guitar rhythms & solos, and infections pop hooks. Its got a little something for everyone and is sure to get you off your feet dancing.

What is your creative process like?

I usually have a bunch of lyrics compiled either in a notebook or on my phone. I take those and I sit down and combine the most relevant ones, grab my guitar and try and put them to a melody. Once I’ve got something I’m happy with, I put it into my program and start composing with the different instruments around melody! It’s always a work in progress until I’m happy!

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I’d love to be able to collaborate with Lady Gaga or Avril Lavigne. I love the way they write their songs, as well as their style. I think it would be pretty amazing to be apart of anything they create!

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

I’d love to be able to open for Lady Gaga. As a huge influence in my music, she’d be pretty awesome to open for, and learn so much about what goes on behind the scenes!

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Believe in yourself, and don’t ever give up.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

I don’t actually! But if It did, I’d have something playing through my speakers and be singing along!

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

I’d think I’d be a Pilot. I love to travel and see the world, what can I say?!

Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

I’ve performed all over Vancouver, BC, and Toronto, ON. My favorite was performing at the MOD Club in Toronto, and at the Guelph Concert Theatre opening for AKON. As for Least Favorite… When I was just starting out I had played a Pub in Vancouver in one of the sketchiest parts of town. Looking back, I’m glad I did it and paid my dues, but I probably wouldn’t go back.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

I love it! I’m able to reach a lot more of the world that I wouldn’t have dreamed that I could! Music is more accessible than ever right now, and I’ve got countries listening and downloading my music that I haven’t had a chance to visit yet. It’s really cool!

What is your favourite song to perform?

I love performing ‘Do You Believe In Karma’ which is sort of like my theme song, and ‘Dear John’ which is my latest single that I wrote for my father who passed away from Cancer.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

Oooou. I was blacklisted from a club in Vancouver. That’s all I’ll say about that.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Believe in Yourself. I’ve always had trouble believing I can do anything, and it’s taken me a while to build up that confidence, but its something that I constantly am reminded of when or if the doubts creep in.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be? ·

I’d change the way female entertainers are stereotyped. From looks, to voice, to the way we act… Everything is under a microscope and it shouldn’t be. We already have enough to deal with in general, and we shouldn’t have to continuously prove ourselves to get ahead.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently back in the studio and working on new music. I’m working to finish up the last few songs for my album to be released in 2021!

How important is the current climate crisis to you and how do you think you could help?

Climate is and will continue to impact the world and it is important to do our own parts to improve things. Read, gain knowledge, and educate others! There are so many different things we can do!
