A Star In The Making: Juanialys

The multi-talented songstress used the scars from a past relationship to tap into her creative vibes to create her new single, “Yours.” An in-your-face diatribe that cuts right to the chase and lays it all on the table shows the ability to draw from personal experience on “Yours,” while showing range and showcasing her beautiful voice. The single has been spinning on Power 105, and it’s evident that this is the beginning of something big from the native New Yorker. “Yours” is the tip of the iceberg as Juanialys will star in her first film, “Fade In,” set to be released in late September. She is also pursuing modeling as well as dancing while sharpening her skills in the marketing department.

During our recent conversation, Juanialys explains the importance of building a solid team, upcoming endeavors and much more!

How is everything going? You seem to be staying really busy.

Juanialys: Yes! I’m really excited about how everything has been turning out lately. It’s been about 4-years now that I have been chasing this dream on this journey, and I think now I’m seeing things clearly now. And the clearer I see things the more exciting it is for me. I’m happy.

Has this journey been easier than expected, tougher than expected or about what you anticipated coming in?

Juanialys: I think this type of journey, you can’t really put your finger on what to expect because it’s so different for everyone. I went in with that mentality when I started chasing this dream. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I knew I had to put my best foot forward and just give it 100% if I wanted something to come out of it. I went with that mentality and with that mentality (laughing), it’s been crazy, it’s been tough, but it’s also been a big blessing. I don’t see myself doing anything else. Even in the tough times I find beauty in it, and I think that’s the most important thing for me to keep going, to keep myself focused and inspired.

You have the looks, you have the talent, you see so many artists talk about the intangibles having to align with the talent or you won’t make it. Do you feel the stars are aligning for you both on the surface and behind the scenes?

Juanialys: Yes! And I will say because I feel like my team that I’m building is becoming more solid than it’s ever been. I think on this journey, it’s super important to have people that you trust, people that know what they are doing. For the past few years, it was kind of a challenge building that foundation. Thank God I had a lot of other blessings and opportunities that were thrown my way, but I didn’t feel like I had a strong foundation like I have now. Although, I did always have a lot of people that supported me if that makes sense. It’s almost like I’m contradicting myself because I had a lot of people that supported me, but I didn’t have the foundation that I needed to get where I was trying to go as I do now. You hit the nail on the head. Everything is aligning right now, and I think that is what is making things easier for me.

Your new single, “Yours” is on the radio. To hear your voice and your song play on the radio, what did that mean to you?

Juanialys: I was in Oklahoma… funny. It’s funny that it happened when I decided to be in the middle of the country. I went up to a lake house with a family friend and my mom. We were up there and… it was crazy because in Oklahoma the stations are different and all that. We were in the middle of the forest with a lake. I had to listen to it on a little speaker. I don’t know how they did it. My family at the lake house did it for me, but they got it to play on this little speaker. And I had a whole bunch of people that were sending me videos from back home. They were in their cars listening to it. It was a beautiful feeling. It was my first time hearing my own song on the radio. I’ve been on the radio once as a feature on a song, but my actual song by myself and something that I came up with… it was crazy. I was super thankful for Nyla Symone. She is the one who played it on Power 105. It was amazing. I can’t wait to get more music out there.

That’s the self-satisfaction that we all search for after putting in the hard work. Was that the feeling you had, like all the hard work had finally paid off when you heard your song?

Juanialys: Yes 100%! It was like, finally, all the promos, post on Instagram… to hear my song, was like, “Shoot, I was doing it all for something. Look at where I’m at now.” You hit the nail on the head again. I felt so much satisfaction hearing that. I think a lot of us go through this too though. It’s like, “Okay, I did that, now what’s next?” But sometimes you just gotta sit in that moment like, “Damn!” And just look at what you’ve done. I’m practicing that, but yeah, it was awesome.

The single has hit written all over it, sounds like the meaning of the song is personal. I’ll let you explain.

Juanialys: (Laughing). I was thinking of my failed love life. I’ll give ya’ll a little… I’m young. I’m 20. I’m not that experienced in life yet. I’m growing up and finding myself and I have dated. Not many people but I have dated. My last relationship was my most serious one. I went through a lot of growing pains, and as a couple we went through things that helped me grow and just helped me see things through a different light. I just decided that that relationship… there was an ending to it. So, I decided to put it to an end. We both were in the music industry and as artists and creators, we talked about our feels in music (laughing). I said I was over with and done with. Everything is cool, but one of my ways of coping with the “loss,” of the relationship, because he was also one of my really good friends before we dated. I made a song. Even though it’s not that nice, but it was cool to do it because I knew a lot of girls could relate to it. When I write my music, it’s not only for me. I try to make it relatable for other people. It’s no hard feels (laughing). I’ve heard a lot of people say, “I can totally relate to this,” or, “I would totally say this.” Sometimes you just have to put someone else’s shoe on. We’re telling a story when we’re making these songs. You just gotta try to make stuff that people can feel; even if it’s not your story. Neyo, who is one of my favorite writers, I heard a lot of his songs are about his mom and his aunts.

Kas does not throw compliments out to just anyone, to hear his praise of your talents must be very encouraging for you.

Juanialys: Yes-yes! That’s huge! Kas has been an awesome blessing in my life and in my team’s life. I’m super excited. We have done a lot this far in just the little bit of time we have been together, and I can’t wait to continue the journey to do something new.

You mentioned promo work, social media post, marketing yourself to an audience leading up to your song being played on the radio. How important is it for you to master those other aspects of the game outside of your natural talents?

Juanialys: It’s super important to me. I’m glad that you asked that because it’s actually another interest of mine. Other than singing and being in front of the camera, all of the in front of the scenes, I also like being behind the scenes. Marketing is kind of one of them, right. Even though I know my team is great, I have to help with marketing and all that stuff. I like to be able to know that I can do it. I just get inspired by other artists because there are so many out there and I watch them do it. I watch how their pages look, and how they are promoting their music and it’s important because that’s who is moving the industry right now. Back in the day you had to really be out in the streets promoting your music. Now, it’s social media. There are stars being made from social media, which is kind of crazy, but also a blessing. It’s really important because it can take me from one level to the next which is proven, so it’s dope.

You are also a part of a film that’s set to come out in late September. It is already nominated for, “Best Full-Length Feature Film,” at Morehouse Film Festival. Tell us about, “Fade In!”

Juanialys: “Fade In,” was an awesome opportunity. I have been interested in acting since I was little as well. It was pretty amazing when they called me with this opportunity. It’s important to me because there is a message. There are actually a whole bunch of messages. I can give you a brief summary of what it is about. A high school girl, just finding herself. She is working hard to be able to go to a good college. Her mother passes away at a young age, so she’s living with her dad. But then she finds out that her dad is hiding undocumented papers. So, she didn’t know that she was undocumented. That’s really hard for kids who are trying to get into good colleges. So, her school is doing this cool scholarship offer. She’s trying really hard to win this scholarship. She ends up falling in love with a girl who is a Muslim. She just goes through a whole bunch of drama. Her boyfriend breaks up with her because she’s undocumented. A whole bunch of crazy things. You’re just able to see this young girl go through all of these changes and real-life issues that people are going through. I thought it was amazing that I was able to play such a role and take responsibility to show the difficulties that young people go through. It was a college student film, so it’s not a full-on movie. I won’t give away the ending because it’s not really a full-full ending. So, I want to leave that for people who want to watch it. It was really cool. It was a dope message. It was done with college students who are learning film. So, it was pretty awesome to work with young kids who are working towards their dreams. It’s super inspiring and crazy to me that we made a movie. It got nominated into a Film Festival. So, I’m super proud of us. We did that. We did the movie in a month. It was pretty crazy.

I love the fact that a lot of young talents aren’t leaving any of their talents on the table. You are not afraid to explore outside of music and that is dope.

Juanialys: Yeah! Thank you. 100%! I want to model too and dance. I used to dance when I was little. I want to get more into it. I can’t say I’m a pro, but I love the art and the ability to express your emotions through your body. It’s pretty cool. And I would love to get into that more. I love all of the performing arts stuff.

I can’t wait to watch the evolution as you continue to grow, put out more music and show us all of your talents. My best wishes to you. Is there anything else you want to add?

Juanialys: Thank you so much. Thank you for taking the time out to interview me. It means a whole lot.
