Get to Know Ron Fuches, Star from Disney’s “The One & Only Ivan”

An adaptation of the award-winning book about one very special gorilla, Disney’s “The One and Only Ivan” is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place one calls home. Inspired by the book based on a true-life story about a gorilla that lived for 27 years inside of a Tacoma, WA shopping mall, before moving to a sanctuary to live out the rest of his life.

I got the chance to sit down and speak with one of the stars of this movie, Ron Fuches, who plays the voice of Murphy the Rabbit.

Of course, we know you play one of main of the characters of the film, Murphy the Rabbit. How would you describe Murphy?

Ron Fuches: I play Murphy the Rabbit, who lives inside of a fire truck that he is in love with. He is one of the performers in the circus that Ivan is a part of. If you ask Murphy, he would definitely say that he is the main attraction of the show, but I am pretty sure other people would not agree with him. He is very comfortable in the circus and does not want to leave the circus. All in all, he is a fun-loving, optimistic guy, kinda like me.

I know this story is about the beauty of friendship and what can be considered as the comfort of what you would call home. What do you believe viewers, both old and young, will take away from this movie?

Ron Fuches: Like you said this movie is about home, and the ability to take home with you wherever you go. Regardless of where you are, even if you are somewhere that you feel you may not belong, you have to remember that you are not alone, and that you have friends. You have people around you and you have the ability to change your circumstances. Just like in the movie, Ivan discovers the true power that he has within as well as the power of friendship.

I see that this cast was made up of an all-stars, which included Angelina Jolie, you, Sam Rockwell, Danny Davito, and the queen herself, Chaka Khan. How was it working on this film with such a versatile, but extremely talented cast?

Ron Fuches: For me it was crazy! I was thinking “how did I get here?” I was thinking did Jordan Peele say no. Was Keegan-Michael Key and Kevin Hart too busy? Why is it all these A-List stars and then me? But then I realized that it’s because I am an A-List star and we don’t even know it yet. (LOL) I am not going to lie, I was extremely excited as this is a dream come true, but my mom was most excited about Chaka Khan as was I because I grew up listening to her. It is a truly an A-List cast that I feel lucky to be apart of.

Yesssss, you better day that loud again. That is definitely a blessing. Now I know that you have also had success in the animated movie, Trolls. Can you tell me a little about that?

Ron Fuches: Sure… I play Cooper in Trolls. He is the guy with 4 legs, kind of giraffe-like, and wears a hat. I also played Cooper in the Trolls sequel as well. Once I got that role, I was like “I will never give this role up.” So I am the only guy that is in the movie, the Netflix show, the sequel, and they used my voice when they did the live-action event, Trolls on Ice. I literally did everything Cooper-related.

Pre-COVID, we know that of course there would have been a major red-carpet premiere, however with the onset of the pandemic, how will the premiere be different?

Ron Fuches: I think the creative side of how the premiere is going to be done is what makes it fun. It is a little sad that we won’t be able to do a traditional red-carpet event, I know my mom was really looking forward to giving Chaka Khan a hug. But instead, we get to share the premiere with everyone. We are doing some LIVE watch-a-long parties. We will be able to tweet along with people as they watch it. It makes the premiere more for everyone and less of the normal snooty, Hollywood parties. This gives everyone the chance to hang out together. I honestly prefer it this way because I love stuff like that.

So what is next for you?

Ron Fuches: I do not know. (LOL). I am hopeful that people will like the movie and want to hire me for more stuff, that would be great. I am working on my show about my son and me. It is about being a single dad and raising a son with autism. I am also working on my live stream event which will take place on September 5, where I am doing an hour of comedy that will be put out on YouTube for everyone to see. This is going to be a new, interesting thing for me to do. I am planning to keep writing as I prepare myself for the next opportunity. Lastly, but not least, I have a game show coming out on Quibi called Nice one that will be coming out around the same time as the movie is set to premiere.

Any last words before you go?

Rom Fuches: I honestly hope that your readers really enjoy the movie and that they receive a positive message from it. I hope they get a little bit of relief from this now stressful work that we are living in. And I really hope they like me.

The “One and Only Ivan” is set to premiere exclusively on Disney + on Friday, August 21, 2020.
