M.E.I. Recordings’ CEO Meikhel Talks Inspirations Behind Artist Management

Meet Meikhel — the founder and CEO of M.E.I. Recordings, which stands for music, entertainment, and imagination. M.E.I. Recordings is a music management and public relations company dedicated to discovering artists and elevating their careers.

“We pride ourselves on aiding artists reach their full potential, particularly focusing on career longevity and legacy, Meikhel said in a recent interview. “We work with artists in all stages of their careers; artists who haven’t released any music to artists with an extensive catalog. We want to aid artists in creating music that will stand the test of time. We want to make it so artists don’t have to do anything, but create.”

According to the founder, the goal of starting the company was to provide talent with a platform to help them game buzz and to help “elevate them from local fame to worldwide stardom.” The company currently has two artists on their management roster, as well as three that they do PR work for.

Keep reading to learn more about how Meikhel started his artist management company as well as his goals for the future.

Tell us about who you are and where you are from?

I am the founder and CEO of M.E.I. Recordings. I like to consider myself a king of all trades. I am an artist manager, A&R, songwriter, executive producer, talent agent, publicist, writer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and attorney. I am originally from West Palm Beach, FL, but now live in Miami, FL.

How did you get your start in the industry and what do you currently do?

I grew up listening to all types of music such as Disco, Funk, Hip-Hop/Rap, Jazz, R&B/Soul, Reggae, Rock, and Salsa. I also played the drums and trombone. My first love was Hip-Hop/Rap though. Some of my first words were Hip-Hop/Rap lyrics. I wrote my first Hip-Hop/Rap lyrics at seven years old. I started recording music in middle school and putting the songs on Myspace and then YouTube when it came out. I continued to record music until about 24 when I decided to transition to a more behind the scenes role. I acquired some connections and networked during my time being an artist. Currently, I manage artists and do PR as well.

What was the mission behind starting M.E.I. Recordings?

M.E.I. is an acronym that stands for “Music. Entertainment. Imagination.” When saying the name, MEI is pronounced “Me.” The company’s logo brandishes Apollo, the god of music.

The mission has and always will be to give true talent a platform. There are major artists who are less talented than many underground artists. We feel that there are so many great artists that go undiscovered because they don’t have the money to invest in themselves, or just don’t have someone to vouch for them or willing to build them up from scratch. Most management companies and record labels only want to work with artists who are already established or have a buzz going. Doing that loses out on amazing artists. We want to fight for the underdogs and help them gain that buzz.

What skills do you have that led you to be able to start this company?

I had and have a lot of music knowledge, particularly about the major players in the industry and the new innovations and trends. I have a legal background, so I understand the various contracts that are readily seen. I understand artists at their core; I tend to see myself as an artist still, so it helps to relate and put myself in artists’ shoes. I also have a lot of gumption, and I’ve always had the ability to multitask.

What words of advice would you have for aspiring young entrepreneurs?

My advice would be “don’t talk about it, be about it.” I see a lot of people that get stuck in the “idea” phase. Don’t be afraid to fail, just go out and give it your all.

What goals do you have for your company in the future?

I want to create many different sects. For instance, we plan to offer label services in the near future. Additionally, I want to start doing music licensing and publishing in-house. Furthermore, I would like to branch out of music and enter various realms of the entertainment industry. For example, I plan to start a video production company and talent agency. I am also working on starting a non-profit foundation, M.E.I. Foundation, to help the community. I really want the M.E.I. brand to be the next renowned conglomerate.
