The Black Business Association (BBA) Mourns the Loss of The Honorable Gwen Moore, Chairwoman BBA

The Black Business Association (BBA), the oldest active ethnic business support organization in the State of California, headquartered in Los Angeles, mourns the loss of former California State Assemblywoman Gwen Moore and Chairwoman of the BBA.

Gwen Moore

Ms. Moore wore many hats, she was the Chairwoman of the BBBA, while simultaneously founder and CEO of GeM Communications Group, as a sought-after consultant and worked with several prominent clients across the state.

Earl “Skip” Cooper, II, the President/CEO of the BBA said, “I’m in shock and dismayed. Gwen was a giving and very committed person. She would go out of her way to help others and will be missed by so many people throughout the nation.”

Her first foray into the political arena was to run for the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees. The Los Angeles Community College District, with nine colleges, is the largest community college district in the country. Ms. Moore served on the board from 1975 to 1978.

In 1978 she was elected to the California State Assembly where she served for 16 years before retiring.

Moore was a founding member of the National Organization of Black elected Legislative Women (N.O.B.E.L) established in 1985, as a national organization to increase and promote the presence of black women in government and is primarily composed of former and current black women legislators , as well as many appointed officials. She was also one of the founding members of the Los Angeles African American Women Public Policy Institute (LAAAWPPI), who is one of the premier leaders in the development of public policy instruction programs for women in the field of electoral politics.

Moore served on numerous boards. Among them were the California State Bar Board of Trustees, the California Small Business Association board and the national board of the NAACP. She was also First Vice President of the California State Conference of the NAACP, and Vice Chair of the California Utility Diversity Council.

Moore knew that good public policy implementation was beneficial for all citizens and has proven that women can make a difference and that EVERYONES VOTE COUNTS!.

The BBA presented a special tribute to Gwen Moore at the Virtual “Salute to Black Women Empowerment Summit” on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.
