The Black Creatures Release Debut Album ‘Wild Echoes’ Via Center Cut Records

Kansas City-based The Black Creatures (Jade Green & Xavier) released their full-length project Wild Echoes, a multi-genre mixture of musical stylings.

The album, written entirely by Jade and Xavier, features their previously released single “Wretched (It Goes)”, which caught the attention of NPR, who promptly invited the duo to take part in their “Songs for Change” project. The album was mastered by Collin Jordan (Xiu Xiu, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco) after being recorded in Kansas City.

The Black Creatures showcase their expert musicianship on Wild Echoes and their ability to create smooth and cohesive music regardless of the genre. From the ambient and enveloping electronic beats on “Lazarus”, to the trappy and fun “Fear & Chaos”, as well as the smooth Erykah Badu inspired “D’ummm”, The Black Creatures prove that their talents and skills know no bounds.

Wild Echoes provides a deep introspective look into themes of suicide, grief, love, and mental health, particularly within the Black community. As survivors of suicide attempts and various forms of abuse, Jade and Xavier wanted to make music that allows people to imagine things that may not exist right now. They explain “Music is very political. It permits us to draw out the blueprints for what we want to create.” With “Wretched (It Goes)”, 90.9 The Bridge wrote “By unifying these disparate musical styles, creating interdimensional narratives and drawing from personal experiences, the duo develops a space for historically diminished identities to be reclaimed and societal expectations to be dismantled.”

The Black Creatures on Wild Echoes: “Ultimately, Wild Echoes is about relationships, internal and external. It’s a reflection of those relationships: relationships with one’s self, with one’s community, differing loved ones, love itself, one’s past, one’s future, someone else’s leadership, a crush. That’s why we called it Wild Echoes. This reflection is untamed and untethered to any guide. It’s dichotomous and is maybe unsatisfying sometimes. It’s wild.”

The Black Creatures make a point to blur the lines of genre while maintaining a recognizable cohesion; oftentimes blending contemporary styles of pop, hip-hop, dance, R&B, EDM, and soul with cinematic and storytelling sci-fi/fantasy elements and themes. With the complex and creative approach, The Black Creatures take to their art, a diverse audience regularly flocks to their gripping and intensely enchanting performances. The Black Creatures are also gaining a presence on YouTube with their weekly “Thirsty Thursday” series and ongoing “1 Hour Song Challenge” where they scheme up new sounds in sixty minutes.

The Black Creatures will be celebrating the release of their record on the day of release at Lemonade Park with a socially distanced concert, and will also be performing at Center Cut’s showcase, along with Calvin Arsenia, on 8/29.
