Ali Aslam Debuts Standout Debut, “The Last American”

Supersonic indie-folk songwriter Ali Aslam, based in Brooklyn, NY drops his debut album, The Last American, today for the delight of our ears. Aslam is known for more than his smooth vocals and blended sounds, making a name for himself through his transparency and honesty as well. Throughout the course of the Fall we’ve heard Aslam creating music on his own terms with a stellar series of single releases including the standout piece, “Photocopy.”

Ali Aslam opens the dialogue about his duality of being a Pakistani-American artist living in New York City. He writes about his struggle with feeling like he doesn’t fully belong to one culture, and works through the mythology of the “American Dream,” a societal selling point that was ever led by anyone who looked like him.
Aslam‘s music explores the complex, sometimes contradictory facets of his identity with a curious introspection, the private musings of a person who has spent considerable time alone on the fringes. Ali Aslam calls his signature sound “supersonic folk” — not the booming singalongs of past genre giants like Mumford and Sons or Fleet Foxes, but rather a current and forward-thinking creation that incorporates diverse sonic elements and reaches across cultures, more like Big Thief or Phoebe Bridgers.
The Last American is filled with some incredible records, rooted in rock, folk, pop, and even a taste of jazz/ funk. Of our favorites, “This American Dream” is a track off of the album that we cannot stop listening to. There is something about the emotion and passion behind each lyric that Aslam sings.
Ali Aslam’s authentic and charismatic manner is what pulled us in, and his incredible vocals and stripped down sounds are what will keep us intrigued and listening. Put this artist on your “Election Week” playlist ASAP!
