Are You Ready? Pex and Music Business Association Host Discussions of Article 17, the Biggest Change to Copyright Law in a Generation

For decades, online copyright compliance has been the responsibility of users and rights holders. However, Article 17, a major change in European copyright law, shifts to a new approach, one in which platforms are obliged to play a more active role. Though a European Union directive, platforms and rights holders worldwide will need to understand Article 17 and how it will affect the entire user-generated content ecosystem.

Pex, the market leader in digital rights technology, has teamed up with the Music Business Association to dive into this shift and its repercussions for music rights holders and the user-generated content ecosystem. On December 8th and 9th from 11 AM – 1 PM ET daily, music industry, legal and technology experts will discuss how creators, rights holders and platforms can get ready for one of the most sweeping changes to copyright in decades.

This free virtual event will cover the basics of Article 17, its impact on rights holders and royalties, and how advanced identification and licensing technology can make platforms compliant quickly. The full agenda can be found here.

“Ultimately, everyone will be impacted in some way or the other by this legislation. Content creators, artists, labels, publishers, rights collections groups, law enforcement, and everyone who uses the Internet,” explains Rasty Turek, Pex CEO. “Pex has been identifying uses of copyrighted material on UGC platforms for the past seven years and has found billions of uses, many of which were able to be monetized. Going forward, these uses have to be identified and licensed by platforms before they can be published, removing a huge burden from rights holders and giving them endless new opportunities to benefit from the use of their content online.”

Speakers will include representatives from European music trade organizations, publishers, distributors, music tech companies, and Pex. Day 1 sessions will focus on Article 17’s effects on content rights holders and creators, with Day 2 sessions focused on UGC platforms.
