JC Stewart Performs Stripped-Down Single “Break My Heart” Exclusively as MTV’s Global PUSH Artist for January
MTV PUSH has named rising Irish singer-songwriter JC Stewart as its first new artist of 2021. On the heels of his newly released pop single, “Break My Heart,” JC opens up to MTV about co-writing the track alongside Niall Horan, coping with emotionally rocky relationships, his songwriting process, musical influences and much more. Plus, he offers an intimate performance of his hit “I Need You to Hate Me.”
On collaborating with fellow Irish singer-songwriter Niall Horan:
- “I heard a snippet of this idea called ‘Break My Heart’ from a friend of mine, and it was something that Niall Horan had. I was like, “What’s happening with that song?” and they’re like “Nothing” – I’m like, “You’re kidding me! That’s such a good song!” And so I said, “Can I work on it?” So I took it and took the chorus idea and then I just rewrote the whole song around it, and I ended up dealing with the same guys and with Niall over lockdown which is really, really cool. We just did it back and forth over Zoom and … it is where it is now!”
On the meaning behind new single “Break My Heart”:
- “It’s essentially a song about meeting someone, falling head over heels, then kinda ruining your life for a bit. And then you’re like “Ah, I can’t bear this. This is too much. I gotta get out. And I think that can be translated to a lot of things.”
On his writing process for the hit “I Need You to Hate Me”:
- “I think my first-ever relationship, by the end of it, it got to that kinda stale stage where we didn’t hate each other, we didn’t fight, we didn’t do anything. There’s just nothing there. And I found that hard to walk away from, cause I felt really guilty for leaving it … the song is about, if you hated me, it is actually so much easier. I could walk out the door, slam it behind me, and be done with this.”
Throughout the month of January, MTV will roll out exclusive performances, interviews and personalized content to bring fans closer to JC Stewart across MTV’s on-air, digital and social platforms around the world.
