Who Is CDK on the Mic?

Back Story – A native of Raleigh, North Carolina. Christian Kornegay, better known as CDK on the Mic, is currently a Multimedia Journalism student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT). Christian enjoyed being a member of the NCAT Blue & Gold Marching Machine which prompted him to begin his hosting career in 2017 when he started to host on-campus events all across the state. Christian started his radio career as an On-Air personality  at 102 Jamz, the Hip Hop station in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Christian was named the official host for HBCU Pulse and was named the top HBCU Host in America by HBCU Buzz. Recently Christian picked up an internship with Warner Music. He aspires to continue his career post-college, growing his brand as well as going on tour to entertain crowds around the world.

The Hype Magazine got CDK on the Mic to weigh in on a few things!

From the outside looking in Who Is CDK on the Mic?

CDK on the Mic is everything you could ask for in an entertainer. A Charismatic, energetic, and compassionate individual. Anybody that doesn’t know me but has shared a space with me knows when I walk into the room the energy shifts. Bringing life to every conversation taking pride in having an ear to the streets.

What brought you to the entertainment industry?

Throughout my childhood I took acting and modeling classes just trying to find my niche. I ended up leaning more towards acting , auditioning for commercials and doing stage plays. Believe it or not, the church gave me my first voice. Every Sunday I would . It wasn’t til the summer before college that I found my exact calling which is Hosting. I started off in the clubs then transitioned to doing all the campus events at North Carolina A&T which led me to getting an internship with 102 Jamz in the promotions department. After four month of non-stop dedication I was offered a position as an On-Air personality.

Tell us about your interview series and why you started it

I originally started “ Ice Breaking Interviews ” at the beginning of Quarantine to give entertainers a platform to connect with their audience on an intimate level since everything went virtual. Hosting the show  “ In the Spotlight “ on HBCU Pulse gave me inspiration to start my own show. We’ve had some huge guests such as Pretty Vee, Jack Boy & Benny Boom. Currently my show lives on Instagram Live but you can find it in a podcast form on all streaming platforms.

What’s the most interesting highlight from your series thus far?

In the beginning the vision was to have upcoming entertainers on the platform but then I got a request to have Sukihana on the show. The interview got emotional to the point where she began reacting to fans in the comment sections speaking on the texture on my hair. This clip of the interview went viral; she even posted it on her page and tagged me. From that point on it led me to having guests like VEDO, Keedron Bryant & Trap Boy Freddy just to name a few.

What do you hope to accomplish with your work and where do you want it to lead?

My dream job is to host my own talk show on television. I always wanted to host the BET and VMA Pre-Show on the rep carpet doing all the celebrity interviews  Before I get to that point I’d like to have a nationally syndicated radio morning show. Right now I’m preparing myself for that by Co-Hosting the hit show on Youtube “ The Sad Boy Saga “ with Horatio Radio. We compliant each other very well with our contrasting personalities discussing controversial topics in pop culture, while highlighting the importance of mental health. I can’t wait for the day that we both get inducted into the radio hall of fame. The Show is sponsored by the trending clothing line with SAD standing for “ Society Acknowledging Depression “.

You’ve made some cool strides in your journey, tell us about being voted the #1 HBCU Host!

April 2nd, 2020 HBCU Buzz put out a poll. This was a month-long campaign to highlight the top 20 HBCU Hosts in the nation. Throughout the entire competition I managed to rack up over 152,000 votes all over the nation coming in at the #1 spot I did this by showcasing my marketing abilities and pure talent on the microphone. During that time I was finalizing my deal with HBCU Pulse to become the Official Host. That position allowed me to engage with the HBCU community on a daily basis. Shout out to the founder of HBCU Pulse Randall Barnes for putting me in that position. After obtaining this award i,ve had the opportunity to tour to multiple HBCUs across the nation!

Tell us about your passions outside of the media realm!

I love band during my time at North Carolina A&T I was a part of the Blue and Gold Marching Machine. Before college I was in band for over 10 years alternating playing trumpet and my primary instrument Euphonium / Baritone. I also did wrestling back in the day but once I got to college I gained a few pounds and put those days behind me.

What’s been your craziest WTF experience thus far in your career?

Hosting for Floyd Money Mayweather in only my second year definitely has to be the cherry on top of my career thus far. During All Star weekend back in 2019 he was the special guest at “ Oak Room “ that night I was on the mic and DJ Clue was on the 1s and 2s. The entire Dallas Cowboys pulled up alongside him. I had the opportunity to have a small conversation with Floyd on stage even till this day that moment is surreal. I was only 20 years old at the time.
