Damon “Amin” Meadows Went From Life Without Parole to Best-Selling Author

Damon “Amin” Meadows, Best-selling Author and south Philadelphia native,  was tried and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in 1993 as a first-time offender. Through Amin’s faith and a successful appellant process, he was released after rehabilitating himself during 21 years in prison. Amin now has dedicated his life to his family and helping the community through education and awareness. Amin’s book Convict’s Candy has been praised by celebrities such as Wendy Williams, Foxy Brown, and Lil Kim. Meadows is set to host Convict’s Candy book release party and red carpet event on April 24th at 5 pm at the Book Boutique (Atlantic Station) 260 18th St. NW Suite 10110 Atlanta, GA. The book also provides a meaningful conversation in support of the LGBTQ community experience in the prison system and sheds a light on HIV/AIDS awareness.

The Hype Magazine sat down for a quick interview with Amin to discuss the inspirations behind his book:

What inspired you to become an author?

Damon: In prison, I wrote a lot of letters and used to help other convicts with their letters to loved ones, to the courts, etc. Writing was always easy for me. I was inspired to become an author when I helped Teri Woods, who was my fiancée at that time, with True To The Game and witnessed Jason Poole become a best selling author with his first book, Larceny.

Describe your journey from incarceration to Essence Best Selling Author in 3 words?

Damon: Faith, Dedication & Blessings.

How do you balance family and career?

Damon: Honestly it’s tough because I’ve missed so much time away from my family. Yet at the same time, failure is not an option because there is no 401k or pension for me, so I grind knowing me and my family depends on it!

What impact do you intend to make with CONVICT’S CANDY?

Damon: To expose the realities of what truly goes on in prison. While at the same time to educate about homosexuality, entertain and to help raise HIV/AIDS awareness, especially in the African American community.

What’s it like getting amazing feedback from Celebrities such as Lil Kim, Wendy Williams and Foxy Brown?

Damon: Being that CONVICT’S CANDY is my first publishing work, it’s truly an overwhelming feeling to be recognized by such celebrities.

What has the response been from members of the LGBTQ community?
Damon: The response has been amazing. The LGBTQ community has been very supportive.

What can attendees look forward to at the book release party?

Damon: I’m excited about the book release party because this will literally be the first time I’m interacting with my readers/supporters face to face. Due to being incarcerated, I’ve never been on a book tour. We’re going to have a ball!

What else can we be on the lookout for from you?

Damon: I’ve just completed my children’s book. It’s a child molestation awareness book that rhymes called “U GOTTA TELL IT”. I have my novel “BOY-TOY” and “HOW TO LOVE A BLACK MAN” about to be released. I’m also excited about the reality show, “WHO WANTS TO BE AN AUTHOR”, that Jason Poole and I have. This year is going to be life-changing! Lastly, thank The Hype Magazine for this great interview and let everyone know that they can order “CONVICT’S CANDY” at www.embracepublishing.com
