0Hedy Wong & Hisonni Johnson On The New Film “Take Out Girl,” Future Projects, Learning & More
Set for release via 1091 Pictures, Take Out Girl is a drama/thriller set in Los Angeles and inspired by true events from the life of co-writer and star Hedy Wong. Directed and co-written by Hisonni Johnson (short Red Hood It, Joker Vs. Joker fan film, Grayson: Earth One), the feature will be available to purchase or rent on May 18, 2021. Rounding out the movie’s multi-cultural cast are Ski Carr (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Blue Bloods), Lynna Yee (Fresh Off the Boat), J. Teddy Garces (Days Of Our Lives, Zane’s The Jump Off), Lorin Ly (One Day), Dijon Taylor (Glee) and rapper $tupid Young in a cameo role.
In short, Take Out Girl tells the story of Tera (played by Wong), a 20-year-old Asian-American woman who parlays her family restaurant delivery expertise into a profitable drug hustle in order to help her immigrant mother’s struggling business. Per Johnson and Wong in a press release: “We hope that Take Out Girl makes a positive contribution to America’s social climate by provoking healthy conversations regarding this country’s varying cultural fabrics and our shared struggles. We truly believe that diversity is a source for strength, not division.” The film won “Best Director” at the American Black Film Festival, the “Robert Rodriguez Indie Auteur Of The Year Award” at Bare Bones Film Festival, “The Raising Voices Award” at DisOrient Film Festival, and was an official selection at multiple influential film festivals including Cinequest and the Asian American International Film Festival.
On May 5, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with star/co-writer Hedy Wong and director/co-writer Hisonni Johnson via Zoom, as embedded below. Besides Take Out Girl, we spoke about other upcoming projects for both of them. More on Take Out Girl can be found here, here, here and here.
