Olivia Rodrigo Named MTV’s Global PUSH Artist for the Month of May

The rising superstar opens up about her debut studio album “Sour,” her musical upbringing and finding confidence as a songwriter

PLUS: Exclusive performances of “drivers license” and “deja vu”

Today, MTV PUSH reveals rising superstar Olivia Rodrigo as its featured Global Artist for the month of May. The 18-year-old singer-songwriter connects with MTV about her musical upbringing from a young age, finding her confidence and voice as a songwriter on her upcoming debut studio album “Sour,” and offers advice to aspiring musicians. Plus, the chart-topper shares two exclusive performances of her hit songs “drivers license” and “deja vu.”

On the influences behind her upcoming debut studio album “Sour”:

  • I really tried to work hard to carve out my own sound and my own lane. I just hope that people sort of see bits of themselves in my songwriting, hopefully, or sort of become engrossed in the stories that I’m telling because those are my favorite records to listen to.”

On songwriting at a young age:

  • “I’ve been writing songs since I was so young, literally, my parents have VHS tapes of me making up songs about the craziest things. There’s this video of me at 5 or 6-years-old and I’m talking about getting lost in the grocery store. I’ve been writing forever. The first song that I remember writing on the piano was this song called ‘Superman’ and the lyrics were, I don’t need no superman to come and save me, to come and teach me lessons, because I’m a human being and I can clean up my own messes. I was probably 9-years-old at the time and I was very empowered.”

On advice to aspiring musicians:

  • “My biggest advice to an aspiring songwriter is that it is so important to make art with absolutely no intention of it ever being consumed. That’s just the best thing I think you can do as an artist and just as a person, just do it for the love of it. Just work your little butt off and listen to artists that you like and be inspired by people and be inspired by your life experiences, I suppose.”
