The Joy Formidable’s Ritzy Bryan On Best Friends Animal Society’s “Songs To Save Them All” Event, Future Band Plans & More

Best Friends Animal Society is a leading animal welfare organization working to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters by 2025. Founded in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the “no-kill” movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from an estimated 17 million per year to around 625,000. Best Friends runs life-saving programs all across the country, as well as the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary. It works collaboratively with a network of more than 3,200 animal welfare, shelter partners, and community members nationwide to “Save Them All.”

Numerous musicians are set to appear in Songs To Save Them All: A Benefit Concert For Homeless Pets, a 3-hour benefit concert for Best Friends Animal Society streaming on May 6, 2021 at 8:00 PM EST. Recording artists expected to perform include country music legend Emmylou Harris, Aunty Social, Baker Grace, Brandon Jenner, Canyon City, Chappell Roan, Davis John Patton, Dylan Dunlap, Geographer, Joshua Radin, Laura Jean Anderson, Munn, Pryor & Lee, Sammy Rae, SYML, The Joy Formidable, Tim Atlas, Two Feet, Victoria Anthony, WILD, Wild Rivers, WOLF and Wrabel. In addition to the music talent, celebrities including Amanda Seyfried, Alison Pill, Brittany Snow, Holly Taylor, Kat Dennings, Tricia Helfer, author W. Bruce Cameron, TikTok influencer Caitlyn Cohen and others are also expected to make appearances to support the cause. The free event will livestream via Tiltify, Twitch, YouTube and Facebook, as well as through Best Friends’ website at bestfriends.org/concert.

The aforementioned trio known as The Joy Formidable shared a brand-new single last month titled “Into The Blue.” It is the band’s first new material since its kaleidoscopic 2018 album AAARTH. Written in North Wales and later completed at their homes in Utah, “Into The Blue” arrives self-assured and forthright, in a world still trying to regain its footing, stalked by the specters of manipulation, mis-information, and trepidation. Music aside, The Joy Formidable has also kept active via its community-focused TJF Music Club, as launched in 2018 and giving fans a way to directly interact with lead singer and guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bassist Rhydian Dafydd Davies and drummer Matthew James Thomas.

On May 5, 2021, I had the pleasure of interviewing The Joy Formidable’s Ritzy Bryan about working with Best Friends via Songs To Save Them All: A Benefit Concert For Homeless Pets, the band’s plans for a followup to 2018’s AAARTH, life during COVID-19, living in Utah, Welsh art and plenty more.
